How much insurance do I need?

I still can't decide who to go with!

Was thinking about Pet Plan but there's seems to only be £4k cover (per year, per condition I think).

Others have higher limits (M&S etc)

How much cover do you really need for a moggie realistically? I'm guessing the highest costs would be if he was run-over or developed an ongoing medical condition?

Hi

Petplan have 3 diffetrnt levels of cover. £4k (budget plan), £6k (can't remeber the name of?) & £12k (supercat plan).
Both of mine are insured on petplans 'supercat' plan which covers each up to £12k per annum plus has lots of added extras on top. It costs slightly more but I think its worth it just in case.

Re: How much insurance do I need?

I have my Dog insured with Petplan they are a bit more expensive but they do the life time cover so if an on going problem occurs they pay out for life and not just a year. You must ask for that cover though and make sure you get it.

Re: How much insurance do I need?

The £6k one isn't available online though so can;t us Quidco, but I suppose that's a minor consideration.

I don't think it's worth me paying for the £12k cover as I can't see any way vets bills would be that much - maybe for a pedigree cat or something but not a moggie surely?

Re: How much insurance do I need?

it's irrelevant whether the cat is a pedigree or a moggy the vets charge the same - the cost is for treatment. If your cat developes diabeties then whether it is a moggy or a pedigree then the cost is the same and that is a lifelong condition. Moggies tend to be let out more and are actually more in need of the extra cover - road traffic accident costs can easily be in the £1000's, whereas most pedigrees I believe are kept as house cats. My moggy is insured for more than my pedigree for this very reason - he goes out she doesn't.

Re: How much insurance do I need?

My vet did sy the highest bill he'd had for a cat though was £3k after a traffic accident so I was thinking £4-7k would probably cover most eventualities wouldn't it?

I'm not paying for the Supercat plan cos it's half as much again per month and I can't justify that. Most other plans seem to quote around £10pm for between £4k-7k cover. Might go with the £6k one!

Re: How much insurance do I need?

Always beware of pet insurance. I had a dog covered with Pet Plan. The 1st year she got kennel cough, which they paid out for, but when we came to renew she wasn't covered for kennel cough, then she got conjunctivitis, again they paid out for, but when we came to renew again, she wasn't covered for keenel cough and conjunctivitis - at this point we realised by the time she reached old age, she wouldn't be covered for anything, so we cancelled the insurance and put the premiums in a seperate account. She lived to a ripe old age and never needed the set aside money, so we were able to have her cremated and were left with change!

Re: How much insurance do I need?

we have both our cats on 4k moggie insurance with petplan. which i think is adequate.

Our cat boog was very ill with nasal lymphoma and her bills came to ~£3500, which included normal vets bills and RVC bills for xrays and investigations etc and included the bill for putting her down.

i thought it was very reasonable, easy to claim etc they even said i could pay just one excess payment even tho i should have paid 2. They were very helpful and the girl i spoke to after boog was put down seemed genuinely upset! lol

There was a problem with them receiving my claims, they say they didn't get them and the vets definately sent them in the end they were sent 4 times to make sure they had it, but i think that's cos they have soo many bloody fax machines that it got lost. Anyway that was all sorted and didn't affect the amount i got paid back.

I would recommend them over someone like a supermarkets insurance etc.

I would choose the amount of cover depending on your area, if you live somewhere quiet and the cats unlikely to get run over, like our area then go for one of the lower ones, but if your near a main road etc go for the higher cover.

Re: How much insurance do I need?

But if you have the lifetime cover then I thought any ongoing conditions were covered as long as you keep up the premiums?

Actually the vet did suggest just putting the money aside instead, the only problem with that is if they have an expensive accident or something before you've built up any savings!

Re: How much insurance do I need?

Ah - well, you will find it is all in the wording of the small print. If your pet gets...say, Diabetes, that is an 'ongoing condition' so will be covered. But if they get...say conjunctivitis, that is a one off event and gets added to the list of things they don't cover for again. You know how sneaky insurance companies are!
