I've got a new Siamese kitten!

Hi,

I'm new here and just got a Siamese kitten on Friday. He's called Max, he's 13 weeks old and a blue point. I have no papers for him, in fact nothing for him at all, the woman I bought him from was allergic to him, so had to rehome him. She hasn't given me any details re vaccinations or worming etc. and won't get back to me with breeder's name and address.

I took him to the vets yesterday for a check over, but because we don't know if he's been vaccinated (she said he has but had no book), we have to wait 3 weeks before doing it to avoid an overload on his system. That means I can't introduce him to my other three cats plus my friend's who lives with us at the moment, so life is interesting - the adult cats are mainly living in the kitchen, he lives in our bedroom and I take it in turns to let them out! He really wants to get into the kitchen to meet them, but will have to wait.

Anyway, I love him to bits, he's so loving and cuddly, sleeps in bed with me (proving a bit of a problem for my husband though, who is sleeping in the back room for now, I need to do something about getting him out of our bed I think). He cries if I leave the room and loves to play. Unfortunately he scratches most of the living room furniture and the new rug.

Any tips for good toys? He has a dangly feather thing, which he has chewed through the string of, he has balls and little mice, a cheese chaser from Petstages, a scratching post and a crinkle tunnel! He also loves to sit and watch my tropical fish.

Just had him wormed yesterday as he had a little round belly, bit bloated, which she said may be worms. Forgot to ask about micro chipping but will sort that next time I go about vaccinating. I have insured him too.

Anyway, sorry for rambling. Mainly I'm looking for tips to keep him amused and how to train him not to scratch and climb on the dining table when we're eating.

Thanks.

Re: I've got a new Siamese kitten!

You could ask the vet to titre test. That should be able to determine whether he has been vaccinated or not. However, that said, you may find that is more expensive than a repeat course of vaccinations.

Siamese are highly intelligent and do need to be kept entertained. Interaction with their family - 2 legged and 4 is also very important. Until you can mix him with the rest of your feline family he will attach himself firmly to you and will need to be with you a lot of the time. He has had a lot of upheaval in his short life.

If he is a registered pedigree siamese then the earliest he could have gone to his new home is 12 weeks old, so if he is only 13 weeks old now then his previous owner rehomed him pretty quickly. I do wonder if that is the case and you haven't been fed a story, why the previous owner didn't return him to his breeder. Any respectable breeder would have taken him back and found him a new home, or at the very least been a part of his rehoming process.

He is just a baby, so if you catch him doing something you don't want him to do then give him a firm No and take him away, and entertain him in some other way. That should work with the furniture although joining in your meal is seen by siamese as their right - they are human after all and what is good enough for you, is certainly good enough for them.

Like people all cats are different and its probably just a matter of trial and error to see what he really loves to play with. More likely than not though, that will mean your participation. Cheap usual favourites a small balls of foil or a cardboard box with doors cut into it. A Da Bird toy is probably a must for every cat home, irresistable to all cats, and it could help as part of your introduction process, if you can get them all involved in a game they all enjoy.

If you haven't had a siamese before -beware one is never enough

Re: I've got a new Siamese kitten!

This is going to sound really pessimistic and scary, but I don't mean it in a bad way. I just wanted to say, please keep an eye out for any symptoms that could be a clue to his health, and ultimately a clue to his past.
One of the symptoms of effusive FIP is a bloated belly. This can be very serious, so look out for other symptoms - watery eyes, ulcers or conjunctivitis, jaundice, anemia etc.. (Have a look on google - there is loads of info about FIP)
It does sound a little strange that this owner was unable to show you anything about him, and that does worry me.
How much did you pay, if you don't mind me asking?
I sincerely hope everything is ok and he turns out to be a dream pet.
I pick up my baby siamese boy this friday!

Re: I've got a new Siamese kitten!

Hi and welcome to you and Max. It does sound a little odd that you have no papers, record of vacination etc with your kitten. I would make sure that the vet gives him a thorough check just in case of any problems. I certainly wouldn't take his previous owners word that he has been vaccinated.
As for keeping him amused, my Siamese girl loves to play fetch with a piece of rabbit fur. She also loves playing with 'da bird' which is bunch of feathers on a rod and line. If Max is doing things you don't want him to a firm no and remove him from the situation may be enough but you could always resort to a water pistol - a quick squirt is usually enough of a deterrent. (I use a plant water spray).
Eating, she is not allowed in the dining room while we eat so that isn't really a problem but I know she would try to join us if she could!
Just a warning - Siamese are incredibly curious and your Max will probably try to get into everything from cupboards to the smallest spaces! I had to rescue Mai Tai before she vanished behind the kitchen units via the back of the sink cupboard the other day! If a door is open she wants to know what's the other side.
Good luck with Max. we'd love to see some pictures of him please?

To be honest, I wasn't that impressed with the vet last night, she said she had to ring the vaccination people to find out what was best to do, but then it was too late, so she just advised waiting three weeks so we don't overload his system. Obviously I'll take her advice and wait three weeks, probably by the time a test has been done, a week would have passed (at least) anyway, thanks for the advice though.

I'm not sure he is registered, I have no pedigree papers for him. The lady I bought him from was putting a bit of pressure on me for a quick decision and I really wanted him! Not wise, I know, but I made a quick decision and I don't regret it. She told me he came from a first time breeder and she had seen his mum and dad. She had been told he was vaccinated but didn't think to ask for vaccination book as she had never had pet before. Don't know how long she'd had him, I have tried to get hold of her with all these questions and more but she is not answering phone or email now. Very strange and I am very worried that I am involved in something illegal here, but wouldn't change him for the world.

Thanks for the advice, we have lots of toys, but haven't heard of a da bird, however we have a dangle thing with feathers which he pulled to pieces on the first day!
Thanks

Re: I've got a new Siamese kitten!

If you are not happy with what your vet told you, then I would take him somewhere else and get a second opinion. Better safe than sorry.

If his breeders - first time or not - had vaccinated him then inexperienced or not, I can not see any reason why they wouldn't have passed on his vaccination card at least. If he is registered then he would also have gone out with a transfer slip and pedigree as a minimum.

The whole thing sounds very dodgy, but not illegal, unless the woman you got him from had stolen him. At least he has finally found a loving home.

No, no worries, I wouldn't take their word for it without seen vaccination record.
