Bringing a puppy into a cat house

Me and my fiance have always hoped to get a beagle puppy in a few years or when we have children.

We currently have two cats, they are our babies and we treat them like children. They are completely spoilt and mean the world to us. I would never want to be upset or hurt.

So, my question is...can you bring a puppy into a cat house or would it upset them too much?

Re: Bringing a puppy into a cat house

Its important to give the cats somewhere where they can get away from the puppy, ours liked to sit on the back of the sofa and glare at him but you might need a baby gate to give them a safe area. Its natural for the pup to want to meet the cats and play with them but initially it has to be on the cats terms. They will be annoyed that you have brought a loud, bouncy, bitey pup into their house but they will get over it and eventually will learn to love him/her. Its up to you to teach the pup manners with the cats and not to allow play to become too rough, also never leave them alone together until you trust them 100%. Have fun when you get your pup.

Re: Bringing a puppy into a cat house

Is rescue remedy ok to put in their water, no harm?

I will try that, puppy been a week now and the cats are getting there, been nose to nose but one peed in the kitchen yesterday so assume they are a little stressed as the pup has been in their kitchen area, may keep him out for a while longer.
Any tips?

Thanks
Laura

Re: Bringing a puppy into a cat house

Hi, i think it would be great in the long run. Maybe for the first week theyll be a bit of hissing going on, but it will almost certainly stop.
Definitely agree with giving the cats a safety zone where the puppy cant get to.
We introduced a cat into a home with a 5 year old golden retriever. The dog was alot more interested in the cat, but she hid under the tv unit, computer desk etc. He carried on trying to get right up and sniff her, stuck his head round the tv unit, and before he even knew what happened got a claw on his cheek.
Im not saying encourage your cat to do this, but he never did it again. What im trying to say is, its easy to under estimate how much a cat can stick up for themselves. & with a puppy, they will most certainly be the boss.

Goodluck i hope it all goes well. Let them sniff each other alot through either clothes, or even under the door before you go face to face. You dont want to be taking a puppy to the vet with a bloody face.

Ah you have all been so helpful, I am ok with animals seperately but all together very nervous and I know I shouldn't be!
When he is calm and tired the cats are interested but when he is livily and alert they just meow and skulk off, under my supervision obviously! Slowly slowly thankyou all for your advice and experience!

We recently introduced a min poodle pup to my 18mth old persian Hunter. At first they chased each other around but as the puppy got to 3 mths old she could ponce on the cat so we have had to give them some space until the pup settles down.

Re: Bringing a puppy into a cat house

We have a four year old cat (Otto) and we are getting a puppy in the New Year so I was having the same kind of anxieties!

Otto has a cat flap in the extension part of our house and this is also where he sleeps at night. His food however, is in the kitchen which is where the puppy will sleep eventually I think. We can shut the door on the extension so that Otto feels safe at night when we're not around, but should I move his food in to the extension now so that he is used to having it in there rather than move it when the puppy arrives? It also means he won't have to eat close to where the puppy sleeps - does this sound OK for starters?

Not done this before so any help gratefully received!

P.S. Great idea re the rescue remedy - will def give that a go.
