Litter tray to garden dilema

I was just wondering how to get the cat"s to stop using the litter tray now they are going out,i"ve put the tray right near the cat flap and now it is out side the back door on the step ( i"ve done it gradually ) now it"s at the bottom of the step, they all use it, i"ve tried scratching their paws in the mud to get them to use the garden, because i took the tray away today i"ve found poo and we in my kitchen sink thats not nice , i"ve put the tray back outside for now but when it rains at gets all soggy, i use catsan which is quite expensive to.. has anyone any ideas to get rid of the tray for good

OOhhhppps i"ve just read a similar thread in cats behaviour
I think i"ll try the litter in the garden on a patch that sounds like a plan!

Re: Litter tray to garden dilema

out of interest, how long can cats hold their bladder for? My cats will go outside, but as i've kept a litter tray in the house for the times when they are in and i am out, one in particular (Tinker by name and Tinker by nature) delights in running back in to use the tray or even worse....THE BATHROOM SINK!!
again sorry doesn't answer your question

Re: Litter tray to garden dilema

I wouldn't worry - the trouble is cats will be as likely (if not more likely) to use your neighbour's garden. Having them go in a litter tray instead might be well worth it for the sake of good neighbourly relations.

As for how long they can hold - well, certainly at least 13 hours (mine flatly refuse to go at shows) and probably a lot longer. Remember they don't do social drinking or cups of coffee for comfort like we do. Sometimes I envy them - in the mornings I can't go more than about 90 minutes maximum between loo stops which can be a real pain if you are travelling to a show or a meeting!

Re: Litter tray to garden dilema

I would never relinquish the litter tray. I keep my cats in during the dark hours and do not expect them to 'hold' - guaranteed accidents, I think.

What is the problem with providing a litter tray or two. They don't get used that frequently and are easy to clean etc.

No smell if you make sure they eat decent food (not whiskas )
