Claws!

Crap....am having an awful time trying to cut my brood's claws

Even the vet has tried but Baxter screams so loud the vet has to put him back in his carrier before he has a heart attack, Barney rips anyone to shreds who comes near his claws, and Audrey drools and cries so bad i cant do it!

Last night i had Barney wrapped in a towel trying to cut them, his paw escaped and he reached up and sank his claws into my face and top lip He's ripped right through my lip - its the size of a house at the moment, and contemplating whether i might need a stitch or two!!

I know its not his fault - but there must be an easier way to do it??

I don't really know what to suggest but just wanted to say that I know your pain

Re: Claws!

Would it help if you tried giving them some of those calm drops, Serenum I think one is called, something like you give them on fireworks night to chill them out a bit first.

Hope your war wounds heal up super quick!!

Lol. Get a Maine Coon

I snip Dexters claws when he's like this:

He doesn't even wake up!

Oh my god I hope you are ok, I have had my lip done once by a cat claw. If you have any doubts you should get it checked by a doctor as you need to treat any animal scratch/bite really seriously.

as far as cutting claws, I would suggest about four dropper fulls for bach rescue remedy for the cat, wrap it as securely as possible, if its that bad getting a second persons help might be necessary and do it as quickly as possible, have they ever had a claw nicked, that may explain the way they behave?

Izzie

Re: Claws!

Ouch!! hope you are ok

My cats I wait until they are relaxed on my knee to clip their claws. If they try and wriggle away I tighten my grip a little and say no. If they keep trying to pull their paw away or scratch me I give the paw a little tap and say no. then they keep still. lol

good luck with getting their claws done

Re: Claws!

Oh poor you!! Hope your lip is recovering. Mai Tai has caught mine by accident and it really hurts. Mine wasn't too bad though.
No solution to claw clipping I'm afraid. My son holds Mai Tai down while I do them but she can certainly squirm!
Not wishing to get into the inside\outside debate - I don't have to do Gizmo's as he spends 90% of his time outside.

Re: Claws!

I think (and I confess I have never done it) that those of us who are breeders might do future owners a big favour if we got kittens used to having their claws clipped at a very early age.

I have some that are very difficult as well.

Re: Claws!

Good point. Dexters breeder regularly trims her kittens claws for that very reason. That's perhaps why he's so layed back about it?

ps You can get some nast infections like Toxiplasmosis, Lockjaw & Bartonella henselae Infection. Nasty!
