cat flap or no cat flap that is the question

Hi

OK so who has a cat flap and can recomend them and who has decided not to put one and gets on ok without one. Bottom line is it will cost £150 to get a cat flap put in as we only have full length glass doors at the back of the house - there is nowhere else for it to go at all.
So at the moment we have to keep opening and closing doors to let them in/out which can be a bit tiresome. However the price and stories of other cats getting in has put us off the cat flap idea. The problem with our technique is that we go away for a weekend then they can't go out unless someone comes in and lets them out. But on the other hand we don't have the worry of other cats getting in. I know you can get magnetic cat flaps that go with the collars - not sure I want the cats to have collars though.
Also with no flap they have to have the litter tray indoors and would be good to get it out of the kitchen eventually.

Cheers

Re: cat flap or no cat flap that is the question

Hi

This may take some lateral thinking!

I managed to get a cat flap put into the panel in the bottom of my front door, but have you got another window that you could perhaps put a run/plank up to?

We also wrestled with this dilema and decided to go for "no cat flap" - There are so many stories of other cats being able ot get in, even with the magnetic catch types (they learn to pull the flap outwards and then get in)

My six year old is happy to let the cat in/out as appropriate. We don't have a litter tray - the cat just stands by the back door and mews if she wants to go out and then someone lets her out. This worked even when we had two cats.

If we go away we usually have a cat sitter.

Re: cat flap or no cat flap that is the question

I don't have a cat flap as our house is very odd - there is no obvious door where one could go and as the house is old (we're actually fortunate that it isn't listed!) a cat flap would look out of place. Gizmo is very good at letting us know when he wants to come in or out. We don't go away. And if he is outside when I go out he an get into the garage to keep dry - though he's usually alseep in the compost heap!

Re: cat flap or no cat flap that is the question

i have a got a cat flap but it goes into my out house which is heated for my out door cats, i have two cats that hate the house i don't know why but i was worried as in winter they will get wet and cold, i have done everything to get them in but hope, so i put a cat flap in the out house and got heating put in, i go in every day with food and water, i never see any other cats in there but this is due to my boy cat he rules my neighborhood. my indoor cats have litter trays with cat flaps on but if i leave the flap on they will not use it, they poop and wee all over so, i suppose what i am saying is even if you get it fitted you are not guaranteed for the cat to use it.

OOOOH!! have a look at oine of these let meowits

Buy Let Meowt Window Mounted Cat Door Cat Flaps

i'm sure they arent the only type of thing you can get fitted to a window! its not at typical cat level so stranger cats might not notice its a way in, also if it suits you its a third of the price!

Re: cat flap or no cat flap that is the question

I have an ordinary catflap for my 2 boys and wouldn't be without it!
I've never had a stray come in as far as I know.

Re: cat flap or no cat flap that is the question

Like you we only have a glass door that the flap can go in. We have decided to try a shed with a cat flap to start with. It will have her bed, food and water in and obviously keep her dry in the rain. Unsure what to do about heating at the min but we have time to think about that (she's only 5 months).
If the shed idea doesn't work we'll be getting a cat flap but hopefully we'll have a front porch by then and can have it there otherwise it will be the glass door...

Re: cat flap or no cat flap that is the question

I think the shed with cat flap is a good way forward - but how do you stop other cats getting in? Are the cat flaps that are triggered by a magnetic collar reliable?
There is def no other place to put a cat flap - other than in the downstairs toilet window. I'm sure they would work out how to use it by it does mean possibly that cats will suddenly descend on people using the facilities!
