Food question....

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering at what age you guys have stopped/will stop with kitten food and move them on to adult food. I know the kitten food says up to a year but is that the golden rule? It's so long since I've had a kitten I can't remember when we moved on to adult food!!! Won't be doing aything yet as Jasper is only 5 months but just thinking ahead. Most of the kitten food seems to be chicken based and sometimes he looks at me as if to say "really more chicken?!".

Thanks

Rach x (And Jasper!!)

Re: Food question....

I normally start the transition at about 7 months and do it gradually over a period of about 4 weeks or so.

It's always worked fine with my lot

Re: Food question....

Great thanks, just mixing some adult in with some kitten as you would when introducing a new food? I just want to be able to give him a bit more variety!!

Re: Food question....

Yep - I normally start with just 10 or so of the adult biscuits and keep it at that for at least a week to make sure there are no adverse effects and then I build up from there if all is OK.

The James Wellbeloved have a turkey variety for kittens, just in case you wanted something a bit different!

Thanks Lou!! He has a tuna variety of the hills dry food and has a mix of the hi life puches (which are all chicken and something) and felix as good as it looks as they have more variety. Will feed him on hi life fully once he's on grown up food as they do a meat selection and a fish one I think. He has fresh chicken or fish once a week too. He eats better than me!!! Will start him in a few months then, I'm sure he'll be relieved!!!

Re: Food question....

my boy Indy moved from Royal Canin kitten food to their Young Neutered Male just after he was neutered, as it is formulated for boys from the op (at5-6 months) on to 7 years, but kept him on kitten wet on my Vets advice.
He switched back to RC kitten when we got Misha as no matter what we do they will swap bowls at breakfast and as he is under a year still fine to have kitten food. though he does have some adult food in the evening too.
Misha was neutered early at 4 months so is still entirely on kitten food but in a month will start introducing adult dry to the mix, Although he stole Indy's last night and no bad side effects so far...

in 2 months all the dry food will be adult and will faze out the kitten wet as Misha already tends towards podgey and adult food is lower energy

according to my vet as soon as they are neutered they can start on adult food being introduced

Re: Food question....

This is actually a very useful question for me too... our Ivy has Science Plan kitten dry food that the vet gave us when we brought her home. As soon as we started letting her out to explore the house she went straight for Bob's wet or dry food and munched on that (Ivy is 4 months old) and now won't eat her kitten food. Now Bob has passed we have loads of her wet food left so have been feeding it to Ivy because she loves it so much. We haven't had any adverse reactions and she's still charging round the house like a loon... should we stop her having it for a while???

My Mum in law's cat did exactly the same! Once he had discovered the adult food, there was no way he was going to go back to kitten food and in fact the older ones used to eat the kitten food too! I would try and introduce some kitten food back into her diet so that she is getting the correct balance that she needs but then as long as she is happy and healthy, I don't think you are going too far wrong!
