It's so long since I've had a kitten I can't remember when we moved on to adult food!!! Won't be doing aything yet as Jasper is only 5 months but just thinking ahead. Most of the kitten food seems to be chicken based and sometimes he looks at me as if to say "really more chicken?!".

Thanks

Rach x (And Jasper!!)
James Wellbeloved also do an ocean fish for kittens if you want something different. Only found it in small size packs but it makes a change from chicken

Re: Food question....

just remember that before kitten food was invented all cats and kittens ate the same food and were very happy on it. Yes kitten food has more vits etc in it and is better for the kitten but all should be fine if they are eating adult food. I grew up with cats and dogs of different ages and most of the time it was like above. The adults ate the kitten food and the kittens ate the adult food yet they all grew up and lived long happy lives.

Re: Food question....

Kitten food is just a gimmick to get us to spend more money! It's not actually necessary at all and it'd be quite OK to feed normal adult foods to kittens. Kitten foods only came on the market about 20 years ago. I do give my kittens various (wet) kitten foods but they also eat a range of adult foods from weaning onwards, plus raw / cooked meats - I don't want them to be fussy when they go to their new homes. My adults also eat the kitten foods, we don't discriminate in this house

Re: Food question....

Common sense too, I think!

i've been breeding 19 years and have owned cats since 1980 - certainly back then there was no such thing as kitten food and no-one was concerned about feeding kittens on adult food. I remember my very first kitten, we had her at the age of 6 weeks - yes, didn't know any better then - the first tin of cat food we bought was turkey Kit-e-Kat

Re: Food question....

Ours have always eaten each others food, so i stopped buying kitten food at around 7months old as he was eating his, our adult was.

Hes very healthy and very fit, so i dont think it matters a huge amount

Re: Food question....

Thanks for all your replies guys, very useful indeed. Think am gonna keep him on kitten food until few weeks after he's neutered (6th Feb am dreading it!!) let him get over that and get him slowly on to adult wet and continue with the kitten dry for a little bit until he's about 7-8 months.

Glad it's helped others too!!

Rach x

Re: Food question....

Funny i was thinking earlier what do the wild cats feed their kittens and the farm cats and also the feral cats ... mice and birds i would think it has never done their kittens any harm..
