You are obviously a very caring owner and I know the dog is just following his instincts but perhaps you need to think of ways of keeping him away from the cats so they can come and go safely in their own home.

I do sincerely hope you find your cat/(s).
HI,

Thanks for your reply. at the moment we are living in a weird house, only renting and looking to buy a house soon so hopefully we wont have the same problem....but the house we live in now is all open plan...the entire downstairs has been knocked thru into one room even the stairs are in our living room, dont ask me what we was thinking when we decided to move in.

The dog loves to be outside so she stays out there most of day with brief stints in the house but e verytime we ghet up she legs it to the back door to go out so the cats get a lot of peaceful time thru the day. Its just as they come and go i have to call her to me to let them out and she still has a little nip, not nasty she loves the cats and gets along well with them , but it is her instinct to chase.

I know this sounds weird too but its almost like the cats dont like the house, me and my partner both hate it as you can hear everything as it is all open plan. I think im going to have a busy day tomorrow up and down the local streets...but in a way i hope i dont find her sat on someones window sill cos i really dont know what i wud do as this is the third cat i have lost this way.

Im sure people round here think every cat they see that eats food must be homeless, i dont know how many times our neighbours have come to us asking if we want a cat they found on the street.

Re: 3rd missing cat

get them back even if you offend people, this happened to my mums cats, her went missing for weeks she had lost hope then the cat just walked in but i have to say the cat is really different, as when my mum got her she also got her sister to and when this cat came back she is nasty and will not tolerate her sister, my mum found out it was a man up the road had her, so my mum wrote a nasty letter to him. now the cat stays in which is sad as she loved going out but you just can't risk it.

Re: 3rd missing cat

Yeah its sad that so many cats are in rescue centres wanting living homes and then cats with loving homes are constantly being lured away by people either intentionally or not. I know it is easy to assume a cat doesnt have a home especially as ours dont have collars but i have heard so many stories about them.

I have tried keeping my cats in but they love to go out, im going to have a look thru my collars tomorrow and put them on my remaining cats in hope that this does not happen again.

I know with one tom he doesnt like the dog but this last one doesnt seem to mind and she is there every morning waiting to be let in. She is a beautiful cat so she may have been cat napped. Or on the other hand she may have been sleeping in someones garden for the past week as we have just cleared the back yard so they may have just assumed she was stray....i will keep peeps updated...fingers crossed for her

Re: 3rd missing cat

People who immediately assume any pretty cat is homeless are a real pain - to my knowledge I have lost two cats this way, one I would have been very happy to rehome (though it was a shock when he turned up wearing a collar!) and the other was being bullied by another cart and had started refusing to come in, but I did not want to rehome her at that stage - it would have come to that in the end though I am sure.

If your cats aren't chipped then get that done asap. And do put collars on - the latest type have a simple stretchy buckle that will easily break if the cat gets caught, as long as you use a proper cat collar there really should be no danger. Get an identity barrel on the collars and write inside that this cat is microchipped and can be immediartely identified by any vet.

If you know roughly where the cats are then a note through doors pointing out that they are yours might help too. I honestly think most people who do this don't really intend to steal the cats at all, they are merely soft-hearted. We see such people posting on here all the time about cats they have "found".

Liz

Re: 3rd missing cat

i got my posters made up now im going to put them in the local shops tomorrow. I know most people dont realise its a common mistake to make, i just hope she has been kept in as they should give her back.

The thing is i know she was in the house all day and only went out late at night and the normal pattern of me losing a cat was when they crid to go out through the day, thats how i know they wanted to be somewhere else. She never seemed this way which is why io am worried it may be something more serious, she has never not come home and im really worried. I just expected her to come in after a day or so....even now i am sat typing this looking out the window to see if she is sat on the ledge

Re: 3rd missing cat

Ohno! I really do hope you find her. Everybody has given you some great advice and I don't really think that I can offer anymore.
My kitty doesn't go outside but she does have a really good fast release collar. It is really effective. One time Waffles was under the stairs (where we keep all our junk ) and she was sitting right out of my way so I reached with my fingers and hooked her collar. As soon as I started to pull on it the collar released - it is very good indeed and it was only cheap from my local pet shop. Obviously it may come off easy and you may lose it but if there is a chance that it will do the trick i.e make somebody realise that the cat isn't stray??

If I was you I would be very tempted to just keep my cats indoors. With lots of stimulation couldn't they have a nice life indoors? After losing three cats I would personally consider that.

Also, I have read that you can cat proof the garden but this may be a problem as you are renting.

Good luck. I really hope you find the kitty xx
