Ear Scratching

My cat Florence is always scratching her ear, just behind it, with her rear leg. It is usually the right ear but sometimes the left. Is there a reason for this? Are the ears a little 'ticklish' or does it stimulate the hearing mechanism somehow? Also she loves to be caressed around here?

Re: Ear Scratching

hmmm I don't know why your kitty might do that but it could be that she just likes the feel of it. My cat particularly likes to have her ears tugged and slightly pulled and I read somewhere that it feels like a massage to them and they think that you are cleaning them

keep an eye that it doesn't get red otherwise I should think it would be ok

Re: Ear Scratching

Hi,
We have had terrible trouble with ear mites in the past if thats what it is.
Check for any black dirt that looks like coffee granules in the ears, if you see this get some surulan (think thats how its spelt) from your vets, and some epioptic ear cleaner. If ear mites aren't treated straight away it can leave a cat with long term excessive ear wax which can takes ages and ages to get rid off.

Hope its not mites.

Izzie

I think investing in some ear solution that you can buy at your vets and and giving it a good cleaning every so often may help, if continues then contact a vet for further information, it could just be ear mites and is easily treated. Good luck and let us know how things are coming along!

Re: Ear Scratching

Hi, there.

One of my cats is always scratching behind her ears.

There is nothing wrong with them, she just likes the feel of it. She loves me to scratch behind her ears and puts her head against my hand in the position she wants me to scratch them.

One of my other cats likes to have her ears pulled slightly as she likes the feel of it.

As long as they are not red or have discharge coming from them they should be fine.

Re: Ear Scratching

My kitten seems to scratch behind his ears quite a lot too. The vet checked him for ear mites but he was all clear. He's had flea drops too so shouldn't be that. He has a little wax in his ears but won't let me near them to clean them! I think he must just like scratching - he di it more when I put a collar on him though, think he was trying to get it off (he succeeded eventually so I've given up on it for now!)
