Question Taking a Cat to the USA, need help!

I will be moving to the USA for 3-5 years and want to take my cat with me. I will not be moving for another year and a half but I just want to get organised. The Cat will be about 2 years old when We move. I know EU countries have the pet passport but I did not know how things worked in the US. I will be moving to Georgia. I know the cat must be microchipped and have the rabies vaccination and have echinococcus treatment. My cat is also neutred which I think is a requirement unless its been taken to the country to breed. I have read that I need a veterinary certificate and some blood tests, any idea how I go about this?

Any advice would be great!

Thank you for your time;

Tegan

If you contact one of the companies that specialise in moving pets they would be able to advise you re paperwork - perhaps try a google search
This is one of them :: Ship Your Pet :: or

Hi! I don't know anything about moving pets from one country to another, but I'll look into it. I live in Atlanta, Georgia. Do you know yet what area you will be moving too? I'll be happy to help you out with any info you need. I'll show you some southern hospitality!

There is a website:Bringing A Pet to a new country-pets-families.com. They had some information on it. You will probably have to check with the Department of Agriculture and then Georgia's state regulations. Let me know if I can help!

I'd ask the vet.. Just be careful with vaccines and such.. only get about 2 or 3 (if one is very weak) during one appointment.. more than that can be fatal.. it happened to my last cat :/

if they want to do more than that many shots make another appointment for a week later

also make sure to keep a close eye on her for weird reactions

i just don't want the same thing that happened to me to happen to anyone else.

Re: Taking a Cat to the USA, need help!

I found the Georgia State regulations, but they have not be updated since 2007 so I do not know if these are the most recent ones:-

*** DOGS, CATS AND PETS ***

All pets entering Georgia must comply with the applicable health requirements of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Georgia Department of Agriculture, the Georgia Department of Human Resources and/or the Georgia Department of Natural Resources

All dogs and cats twelve (12) weeks of age or older entering Georgia must have proof of a current and approved rabies vaccination in accordance with the most recent Compendium of Animal Rabies Control published by the National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians, Inc. Georgia does recognize the 1 year and 3 year rabies vaccination as long as the vaccination is current for the time period.

All ferrets twelve (12) weeks of age or older entering Georgia must have proof of a current and approved rabies vaccination in accordance with the most recent Compendium of Animal Rabies Control published by the National Association of State Public health Veterinarians, Inc. Ferrets seven (7) months of age or older entering Georgia must be sexually altered prior to entry, except those exempted by a license/permit issued by USDA, APHIS, Animal Care and/or the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

All pets, except fish and rodents, entering Georgia for sale, trade, or exchange for a fee or other type of compensation must be accompanied by a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection issued within the previous thirty (30) days and which records proof of the health requirements for each species. Companion animals traveling by commercial carrier require a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection issued within 10 (ten) days of shipment showing proof of the required vaccinations.

I'll check out Oconee for you. It's near Athens, Ga. home of the University of Georgia. They have and excellent veterinary college(I hope my daughter applies there someday). They also have a clinic there. My other daughter works at a boarding facility there too.
