Goin Home for Christmas

Hi, I've been looking at the forum for a few weeks now and you have all helped me a lot reading previous posts. I am the proud owner of a 5 month old kitten called Alfie, I've had him for two months now and he is in general a well behaved kitten, but of course he has his moments like all kittens.

I am going home to my parents for a couple of days at Christmas and taking Alfie with me, it will be a 120 mile journey and take around 2.5 hours. I was just wanting to know how to keep him calm. He does not particulary like the car and cries for the whole of the 20 minute vet journey. I have bought some Feliway spray, but was just wondering if there was any further advice you can give me. I really have to take him as there is no-one to watch him and I'll be gone from Chistmas Eve AM until Boxing Day PM.

I'll try and post a photo of him and see if it works.

Try calling your vet and seeing if there is anything they might be able to give him to calm him down as that is quite a long time for a kitten. Also put rescue remedy in his water just a few drops that should calm him abit

Aww your kitten is gorgeous!

You can get some good carry boxes now that are used for long journeys that have a water and feed bit to them and quite a bit of room to move around.

I personally would get one of these.. can be bought from Pets At Home.. with the Feliway Spray and above mentioned Rescue Remedy in his water he should settle down.

It's better than having to leave him on his own in a cattery over Christmas.

I give ours a drop of valerian compound (from holland and barrat) - they lick it straight from my hand and voila! they are like sleepy babies all cuddly for the night instead of rampaging terrors.
They get it when we have visitors stay over - visitors we want back that is!

I have took kittens in the car that far to shows in the past, just make sure you have a spare blanket for in the carrier for sake of accidents. A bottle of water from home and hook on water bowl for the inside of the carrier, just leave it half full. Oh, and some ear plugs for you and the OH as the arnt all good travellers. Best wishes for your journey and you are doing the right thing taking him along with you to share

Re: Goin Home for Christmas

Hi
i would recommed not feeding him before you travel incase he feels travel sick because it will only make him worse and you will have more to clean up.
il might be a idea to try to keep him awake for as long as possible before travelling because it may make him more sleepy for the trip. it aslo might be a good idea to cover up the carrier with a banket because cats feel more secure in warm dark spaces. you could also put on some quiet music to give him some thing to concentrate on rather than the fact that hes scared. it will also comfort him if you up a blanket or clothing that he uses in with him aswell as some of him toys because it will be a familier scent for him and when you get him to the house you should put him in a quiet room for about an hour to let him adjust and then maybe let him wonder for awhile without paying him any attention to prevent him from becoming over whelmed. i hope this helps you and your pretty little boy, best of luck and merry christmas, Amy
