Unhappy Kitten Not Using His Litter Tray! Help Please!!

Hi,

I got a kitten on Sunday (14th Dec 08) from a friend of a friend as she did not want him anymore and i had just moved into a new house. Casper is about 4 months old and i know its early doors but he is litter trained because, when i first got him on the sunday he did a poo in his litter tray no problems, however on Monday night when i had got home from work he had done 2 in the dining room on the wooden floor. I cleaned this up and then placed another of his litter trays that came with him into the dining room thinking he may use it in there however he continues to do his business on the floor but wees in the litter trays around the house.

At first i thought he was doing this as he didnt like having a mucky litter tray as he had wee'd in it but now i am emptying them and he still continues to do it on the floor but only in the dining room. I have now resorted to putting newspaper down but this is only a tempary measure.

What i do not understand is why he did his poo and wee in the litter tray the 1st time but now wont.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks Laura and Mike

aaaw Casper what a fantastic name

As he is getting used to his surroundings why not isolate him in one room for now? Maybe the dining room as you mentioned it has wooden flooring and so accidents can be cleaned up. Keep the food, water, tray and toys in there until he gets the idea of what he should do.

When I first got my kitten I used to pick her up and put her in the litter tray first thing in the morning and last thing at night and after each time she ate (she doesn't sleep in my bed you see). She always jumped straight out afterwards but I think it worked because we have only had one accident.

I would also be tempted to put the poop in his litter tray. I know that sounds horrible but it might help him with the scent? If that makes sense. Also, when you clean up his accidents you should use a pet odor remover otherwise he might smell his scent and think that it is ok to go all over the dining room floor.

I agree pretty much with WittyKitty. Keep placing him in the litter tray when he wakes and after he eats. Clean the affected area with biological detergent. Have you tried a different sort of litter - he may not necessarily like the type you have. If you have clumping try a non-clumping or vice versa and/or hooded tray if you have an open tray.

Good luck, I hope you resolve the issue.

Re: Kitten Not Using His Litter Tray! Help Please!!

Thank you for your suggestions, i have found out that casper doesnt like wood based cat litter so its solved. The next issue is trying to get him to not use the litter tray in the dining room as id prefer if he used the one in his room, but as it goes he doesn't seem to like that tray.

Thanks for your help

Why don't you swap the tray locations to see if it is tray specific? If not then gradually move the dining room tray closer and closer to the 'his room' one until you can only have the 1 (or have 2 in the same place which is what we have).

Its probably best while he is still such a baby to have several trays around in private places, so he never gets caught short. If its the tray type you think he prefers in the dinning room to his room, try swapping them over, but I would wait until he is older and more in control and settled before you remove any trays.

Sorry I should have said our 2 are 4mths and 14mths. Plus we only live in a 2 bed flat. Must admit though (touch wood) we haven't ever had any accidents..apart from a couple of poos in the bath when Sam first arrived and Dee once when she was poorly (doesn't really count I don't think).
