Litter trays

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to add this to make sure i'm getting it right and also to see how everyone else deals with litter trays.

Jenson's get's changed (Emptied and cleaned with fresh litter) everyday, he has a plastic bag lining the tray (this is changed every few days) and then newspaper with litter on top ( both of these changed daily) all put into a plastic bag in the rubbish.

Today I got in from work and did it as usual, but I just found a puddle on the kitchen floor, I think he may have done it before it was changed as I did notice just before changing it that he went into the tray and had a look at it and walked off and as soon as I had changed it he went in and did a poo (I didn't notice the puddle till after).

I didn't think it was that dirty ( no worse than any other day), he has a habbit of going around the edges so there is always clean litter in the middle, but perhaps it wasn't clean enough for him?

I currently use catsan, but hear that wood pelltes are better and can be flushed? I don't find catsan absorps anything would wood pellets be better to use and so prevent it seeming like its dirty?

What does everyone else use? Does everyone flush it?

thanks for looking.

Re: Litter trays

How big is your litter tray? When I first got Waffles I had a small ickle tray and she always hanged her bum over the edge so I have a HUUUUGE one now

I do it a little differently. I completely clean it twice a week and then scoop it everytime she uses it. i only use a dirt cheap litter though because after all she just toots all over it and I haven't had a problem with odours so far.

He might have just missed if it's not something you've noticed before? Have you tried a hooded tray? Boys can be messy sometimes [their aim can be as bad as two legged variety ]

Re: Litter trays

I use a covered tray - first one after many years of open trays and I wouldn't go back. I don't flush the litter as we have an old house with quite dodgy plumbing but I use a bioegradable litter that goes on the compost heap after the poo has been removed. I clean out poo as soon as possible and check daily for clumps. The whole lot is changed once a week. Poo goes in a bag in the bin.

Re: Litter trays

It's one of those big hooded ones from Argos, i'm thinking I might try wood pellets as they maybe easier to scoop?

Re: Litter trays

Wood pellets are good but imo they go a bit mushy when they're wet so not so easy to get up. They smell quite nice though

Re: Litter trays

I would advise using a clumping litter, there are loads of them out there. As far as I know, the wood pellets wont clump. The reason I prefer clumping, is you can remove the wee in one big lump and none of it should get left behind.
