Cats and Harnesses

I would love Miss Daisy Doo to be able to come on holiday with us rather than staying in the cattery. We have a cottage in Devon we go to, but I would like her to be able to walk around with us as well. I have seen pictures of cats on harnesses and leads, I just wondered how you go about getting them used to wearing a harness and walking with you. Or is it a case of you walking where they want to go.

Re: Cats and Harnesses

Hiya,

I got a soft leather harness and lead which is really lovely. I found that my eldest cat didn't like it very much but the younger ones seem to really enjoy being put on the harness and having a walk round the garden.

If she doesn't wear a collar then the first thing I would try is putting a soft collar on her and let her get used to it, once she will happily wear a collar then you can add the harness. Most cats will firstly try and pull it off or just lie down and refuse to move with it on. Just let her go at her own pace, it does mean you end up following her round a bit lol but once she is used to it she may let you actually steer her in the direction YOU want to go lol.

Good luck, I will pm you the details of that harness, they are really lovely and soft, and very lightweight too which I think helps.

Izzie

Because we live in a busy area Percy has a harness and I often take him out at the back of the house as he loves to investigate the different smells! We bought him a 'small dog' harness from Ebay.

Lightbulb Re: Cats and Harnesses

There are some good tips on harness training kitties on the following website: Catnips. Personally, I prefer Lupine Harnesses that clip shut as they're easier to fasten (my kitten prefers them too, as she doesn't have to wait for it to be buckled up LOL). Lupine ones have to be ordered from the US, but are still fairly cheap, and are well worth it. The lead I use is a FlexiLead, and I last saw these cheap at Asda. My kitty took to a harness very easily, and she enjoys her walks very much. Let me know if you'd like any more help.

Re: Cats and Harnesses

I was reading up on these about a year ago.
You should let her get used to the harness without the lead.
After this attach the lead and let her go around with that for a while. eventually she should let you hold the leash but you follow her direction All being well she should then let you guide her around.

Hope this helps.
