(repost from the nutrition board) PLEASE HELP I think my cat may be ill

PLEASE HELP I think my cat may be ill

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi, I'm new here and in a rather frantic state...I would appreciate any advice you can offer.

My cat is 16 years old and thank god has always coped well in terms of health - no major past problems to report. But today I noticed she was a bit "off", she just seemed quite feeble and grumpy, and later in the day she threw up some hair and saliva. (She has been eating normally though). She has got more and more grumpy throughout the day, she's always quite cranky, but now she's holed herself up behind some storage items and is hissing for no reason when I approach. What could be distressing her? Do you think she's ill, should I force my way in and take her to the vet?

Because of her age and its not her normal behaviour i would be inclined to take her to the vet for a check up. Some thing is bothering her if shes hiding away.

Yes, i tend to agree there, something has upset her or she could be in pain somewhere.xxxx

Thank you very much for the replies and advice.

I am now cautious about disturbing her because she sounds like she is getting weak...hisses very faint etc. I really hope there's not a serious problem. I will now try and get to her...

I wouldnt be cautious on moving her as i would get her to the vet asap if you say she is getting weaker.

Better to be safe than sorry for not acting sooner if there/this is a major problem with her

Thanks for the advice. I took her to the vet and she has some problems with her teeth which explains why she seemed in pain. Fortunately she seemed in a much better mood anyway so I was less worried. She seems completely fine now , and we will think about whether we want the vet to operate on her teeth (he would have to use anaesthetic).

hi if your cat needs a dental then you should have that done for her. If she is in pain with her teeth that will make eating hard for her. If she is fit and healthy an anesthetic is not a huge risk. Living with tooth ache is very unpleasant for people.
