Unhappy Finally given up

After joining the forum and reading all the great advise about a wet diet, which even led to a tense email conversation with a friend who used to have an Oscars pet food franchise, she said a dry diet was the way to go. I have had to admit defeat on all the quality food I have bought from Floyds.

Cookie's cupboard consists of a combination of 41 tins and tetras of non chunky food, she just won't touch it no matter how much new/favourite food I put down. It might be her sore mouth and the chunks are easier to move around but I am throwing away tin after tin. I was going to keep the majority of it but I am running out of space.

So yesterday I contacted the Society for abandoned animals in Manchester - no not for Cookie but all the food. . They seemed pleased with the offer which I will deliver today.

Just have to hope Bozita doesn't go out of business

Re: Finally given up

I must've bought every type of food in Pets At Home when Treacle had a sore mouth (due to teething) and still the ONLY food he found easy to move around was the Hills dry, as the kibbles were so small.... had to donate most of it to shelters. He was like that for 2 or 3 months until he had a tooth taken out at neutering. Now though, he's eating MUCH better, so when Cookie's mouth feels better she will hopefully improve!

Re: Finally given up

At least you took on board the information and gave it your best shot. You can't do more than that..... Well, you could syringe it down Cookie's mouth every day but I really DON'T think you want to go to those extremes!!!

What dry are you feeding? Orijen, Acana or Applaws are pretty much the best for minimum carb so even if you can get Cookie to eat those, then it's not quite so bad. Orijen kibbles are quite small so he may get on ok with those.

Maybe when he is older, and his teeth are done growing, you might be able to try the wet food again.

Hmm, not sure why age should matter. If anything, the more varied the stuff that you feed to them early on, the more likely they are to take to change. Pandering to him now might only create a kibble-junky.

Loads of good info here on how to get cats off their kibble; but the OP's cat is at least eating some wet food.

My bad..... I read both posts and morphed them into one and thought that Cookie was eating the Hills Dry but that was actually Treaclesmums reply.

Re: Finally given up

By chunks I meant wet food not dry. She has a little bit of Hills Natures Best dry food in a food timer, but she barely touches it so she definitely not going to be a kibble junky.

She really only likes the Bozita chunks, so apart from paying for jelly I don't think she is getting bad diet. We haven't had the results back from the vet yet as to what is causing her gingivitis, once we have that sorted I am sure she will eat more.

Thanks for all the help.

Have the vets mentioned to you what they are planning to do for her gingivitis?? all mine seem to say is the same 3 things - try dry food only (no thank you we tried that for over a year before I joined here and it did F - all) they give him anti inflammatory if it flares up (which is very rare hes only had it twice both when he was a kitten) and they have said he will need a lot of his teeth removed

Re: Finally given up

Not yet really, I haven't seen the vet since last Thursday when I took her to be spayed and he took blood and stool samples for analysis, the results haven't come back yet apart from the leukaemia and feline aids ones which were negative, not surprised I already new that.

When I took her the previous Sunday, he gave her an antibiotic and painkilling injection and I was a bit upset as he started to mention possible long term steroids or even having her teeth removed which shocked me in such a young cat, so I am not sure I took on what he was telling me.

I think I read that gingivitis and similar problems could be caused by Calicivirus, has she ever had this

Re: Finally given up

Bless the cats we love, they are so blooming fussy. Well done for finding some wet food Cookie likes to eat and what a kind thing to do to donate to the shelter. You need to get a picture of a shelter cat eating it so you can convince Cookie it wasn't actually poisonous.
