Coughing/retching mystery solved?

Following on from this thread

Very relived atm

Enough was enough today, after yet more coughing and retching Max is now at the vets for investigation, but not before I'd found a small pool of *froth* he must have brought up under the dining table some time yesterday.

Having a closer look at it I soon realised it contained several solid foreign bodies, which looked for all the world like either plastic or bone fragments I took them with me to show the vet and neither of us could decide what they were, but either way they were large and sharp enough to have caused major irritation if not actual damage to his throat. Max simply doesn't eat raw, so God alone knows what he's been eating or where it came from

Typical cat, he didn't cough or retch once after closing the front door and watching him trying to get back in the carrier at the vets after the struggle I had to get him in at home and generally behave like he'd always lived there was the usual eye opener.

I'll be (hopefully) picking him up later after he's been checked over, tho' this needed anaesthetic to do the job properly. I had the option of a antibiotic jab/come home/go back again if he was still coughing, or a full investigation from the start and that seemed the best way to go given the fragments of *whatever* I'd found.......tho' I'll be close on £300 lighter if I include taxi fares.

Wow - I bet he's feeling better now (although must admit to thinking he'd thrown up a coin at first - slow day today)

Could it be the outer to electrical cabling? Is it pliable?

They do look like little bits of bone - could he be raiding a bin somewhere? At least you seem to have got to the bottom of the problem which is a good thing

No idea what it is, but glad you are getting to the bottom of the mystery, and well done for not taking the "easy" way out of just AB & wait - the full investigation may be more expensive, but if it turns out that some damage was done, then it's better to get it treated sooner rather than later.

No, it's rigid and has marks on like bone but wasn't as solid. At first glance I thought he'd been chewing a biro, he may well have done, but it wasn't here if he has.

He may have raided a bin, but I can't see it tbh.

The vet has just called and nothing untoward was found other than him having a incredibly inflamed throat, so bad, even under anaesthetic he reacted to it being touched. He's had both nostrils washed out in case something was lodged there and besides traces of blood from one nostril all was well, his airways are clear, which was a relief as he'd started to mouth breath a little.

I'll be picking him up around 7pm and it's a boiled chicken diet for the next 24 hours, and hopefully that will be it. It seems like the fragments were the cause and once they were coughed up, the rest has just been bad throat irritation from him having tried to swallow them

That's exactly what I told the vet when he gave options on treatment. Far better to get it sorted first time round than wait with possibly more damage done as a result.

Re: Coughing/retching mystery solved?

It does look like bone.

Figuring out where he found it might be a challenge.

You said some of the others were also vomiting, could it have been something they had all eaten?

I don't know tbh, tho' it seems strange that Bosley was also retching and vomiting on Saturday/Sunday night. He's been fine, a lucky escape perhaps?

Re: Coughing/retching mystery solved?

If they raided a bin it could be part of a chicken bone, small fragments which had broken off. They wouldn't be hard if they were thin fragments, I hope the others don't need any further treatment

Re: Coughing/retching mystery solved?

They all seem fine, tho' my semi adoptee has been a bit out of sorts today, but I don't think for one second it's anything to do with whatever Max had eaten. More him being out in the cold so much when he could be warm and snug here

It they were fragments of chicken bone they were cooked, not something I'd ever give a cat. Max isn't one for cooked meat, nor wet food really, tho' he will eat both but much prefers dry, which makes all this even more mystifying.
