Re: Coughing/retching mystery solved?

He'd been *relatively* fine here up till last night and I can't see him being allergic to anything here, nothing has changed but I suppose anything is possible. I know a bad sore throat can knock me for six and with his being as bad as it appears, it's perhaps no surprise if his has done the same to him.

Re: Coughing/retching mystery solved?

The vets have just rung to let me know he's off his food again and now has a temperature of 105, very high for a cat. They're about to test him for leukaemia and feline FIV, neither of which I suspected in the slightest. I'll know more after they've done the in house tests and will update as soon as I find out one way or the other.

A sad, sad day

Ian

Re: Coughing/retching mystery solved?

Oh no, how awful, at least he is in good hands and can get treatment right away. It may be good that they can now see there's something wrong! At least they can now get to the bottom of it, hopefully! Fingers and pawsies crossed here xx

Re: Coughing/retching mystery solved?

I really wouldn't worry to much about the Felv and HiV testing. Some vets do this routinely just to rule it out or when they have a 'challenging' case!

Agree about the throat infection and hope he's much better soon. Maybe a swab would help to identify the correct antibiotic to get this properly under control.

Re: Coughing/retching mystery solved?

Thanks for the good wishes Folks, the vet has called and their next move is a swab as he's clear of both leukaemia and feline FIV and he's eating again

They're testing for respiratory viruses and will be trying a non steroidal anti inflammatory jab later once the steroidal jab he had earlier has had time to clear his system. It'll take a few days for the test results to come back and hopefully I'll be able to bring him home some time tomorrow, then collect any needed medication once they've got said results.

Re: Coughing/retching mystery solved?

Good to hear he's clear. Hope swab results come back quickly. Suspect it's a combination or soreness and fever which has caused the problems so far.

Re: Coughing/retching mystery solved?

Thanks Ian

Considering he's only 5 1/2 years old, he's had some troubled times, losing 3/4 of his tail a couple of years back, being shot in the head with a air rifle and now this.

Re: Coughing/retching mystery solved?

Having had time to think about it, I'm puzzled about the order these latest tests were done

A sore/inflamed throat/mouth *can* be a symptom of both leukaemia and feline FIV, but they're not exclusive to those, and as he was having trouble breathing, surely he should have been tested for respiratory viruses first and if clear of those, then for leukaemia and feline FIV, especially as he shows no other symptom of either.

It's too late now, and while I'm chuffed to bits he got the all clear, I'll still be having a few words with the vets when I next go. If I even suspect they've played a concerned/worried owner for a sucker to get a few extra £'s in the till, I'll play holy hell with them.

Not having been in this position before, am I right to be suspicious?

'EDIT'

Having just read about poor Yuki, I feel a bit guilty about posting this, but here goes as it kinda sums my day up so far..........

Friday is hoovering day and after finishing I was putting the tray back under the stairs and being the clever (pronounced stupid) so'n'so I am, I lifted it with one and of course the ******* thing broke, litter everywhere. It wouldn't have been so bad had it been just fresh wood pellets, but they'd been used at least once, so after hoovering that lot up I was on my hands and knees scrubbing the carpet clean
