Re: aloe vera plant

Is there a nice pretty plant that is safe, cos my Mrs won't be happy about losing her loved aloe plant.

Not sure,I have given up on plants as even if they are not toxic they dont usually live long ,Between me and cats their days are numbered.

Re: aloe vera plant

For what it's worth, on the other cat forum I'm a member of (for hyper-thyroid cats), the members and the vet consultant, recommend the use of aloe vera juice to help digestive issues. The meds, especially in pill form, are very harsh to the digestive system, resulting in loss of appetite, vomiting, and sometimes, bleeding in the stomach. The juice really seems to help with all of those issues, so I don't think it can be outright toxic. On top of this, many of the cats on that forum also have kidney and other health issues, so many aren't in robust health to be begin with, and the aloe helps them.

I'm wondering if it's labelled "toxic" just because, if your cat chows down on an actual plant, it might eat a lot of aloe, which can have a laxative effect (or just from too much of a good thing cause a little vomiting--much like if you gobble way too much ice cream too quickly--ice cream isn't toxic, just your behavior)

I used to have a little aloe plant around, for burns and the like. It was a valiant little thing, but the cats kept nibbling away and digging it up, and it finally just gave up the ghost.

Re: aloe vera plant

Spider plants are ok - just be careful there are two different types, and one is poisonous and one is not, if your unsuredont put any there, but if your oh wants green go for a nice pot of cat grass or cat mint as a herb on the windowsil

Re: aloe vera plant

This is what eHow.com has to say re Aloe Vera plant

Toxicity of Aloe Vera
If you grow aloe vera in your home or garden, be sure to keep it out of your cat's reach. The plant contains saponins, a chemical that can cause gastrointestinal distress. The entire aloe vera plant (as opposed to just the leaf, stem or roots) can be potentially harmful to both dogs and cats.

How can it be so helpful to all of those sick cats, then? It helps their gastrointestinal distress! People prefer it over Pepcid. I haven't personally had to try it yet, since Henry isn't having tummy issues with his meds, but people have had wonderful results. I *have* used it on the dogs when they've had upset tummies, and it helped them--I used to have a big bottle of it in the fridge for myself. But, according to ehow and other sites on the web, apparently we should all be in our graves now. I really just give up. The contradiction makes my head hurt

Re: aloe vera plant

Perhaps in its "raw state" it is toxic,if you get what I mean, and once it has been processed it is okay, just a thought.
