Truffles

My 3 year old baby died yesterday. It was a very unnecessary death , I truly believe the vet misdiagnosed her completely mistreated her too. I had 4 Persian cats, her father/timbers, her mother/gingers, and her brother /Toulouse and of course my little angel truffles. The twins were both conceived in my house and born literally in my arms. I watched their growth from feeding to walking and finally opening of the eyes. truffles was never unwell , never even suffering from a cold. She only visited the vet for her anti heat and annual injections. A week ago I applied frontline but she developed a fever due to the cold weather, even though i kept her in a heated room until she dried. I gave her ibuprofen and she was fine for 3 days. However, when she became feverish again for no apparent reason, I took her to the vet. Her under belly was a bit swollen and she was not eating and quite lethargic. The vet diagnosed her with gastritis and began iv drips , twice a day, and antibiotic injections . He also told me to feed her with the dropper 3 times a day approximately 20 ml each feed. He was also putting the iv syringe near her front legs, almost in her belly, rather than in between the shoulder blades. The next day she was still not eating, walking or passing stool , and her under belly was sagging , as if filled with water. She had also developed a wheeze. The vet did not feel this was lung related and continued with the same treatment for toxic poisoning. The next day her breathing was so labored that everyone could see her diaphragm moving . The next day her breathing was so bad it was obvious her lungs had collapsed, and her stomach seemed as if it was drowned in liquids. the next morning she was crying and breathing with her mouth open and as if in extreme pain. I rushed to the vet he said it was too late but gave her a cortisone shot. That only prolonged her suffering and she drew her final breath in my arms. Another vet said it was definitely a case of pneumonia and she should not have been given drips of force feeds. My vet still insists that she had gastric problem, hepatic lipodosis, even though she had no symptoms to prove this.
I am shattered and not coping to well. I know nothing can bring her back , but if anyone can help me understand if the vet was wrong , I must know , so I find a new vet for my other precious babies.

Re: Truffles

Im real sorry for your loss..

But Ibuprofen is not made for cats and and one tablet can rapidly cause Kidney failure..

Im know thats not what you want to hear.,.. But you have to realise that we are not vets just members.. So we cannot say if the vet is wrong as we just are not qualified..

MoM is right; Iboprofen is highly toxic for cats. So, in a sense, you self-medicating your cat with the wrong medicine could have started all of this off.

Re: Truffles

I'm so sorry to hear about your poor Truffles. She's running free at the bridge now, free from pain and chasing butterflies.

Did you tell the vet that you had given her ibuprofen?

Re: Truffles

Also I am wondering, because you weren't happy with the vet's diagnosis and treatment, did you get a post mortem done? Might be the only way to give you, at least in part, answers.

The second vet who would have diagnosed pneumonia; did they actually see the cat when she was still alive or did they make their diagnosis on the basis of your account?

Re: Truffles

Thank you all for replying , it really helps to know people care.
The second vet saw her an hour before she finally drew her last breath.
And my own vet always has given my cats ibuprofen fir fever and he also prescribed it during treatment, but I will check on line, thank you all again.

Re: Truffles

And it is ibuprofen suspension for children & I have used it before , as that is the only one the vet prescribed. Which pain reducer is safe for cats?

Re: Truffles

The only pain relief that is safe for cats is prescribed by vets, you should never give human pain meds to animals unless advised by a vet to do so.

I dont understand why you vet told you to give ibuprofen

Re: Truffles

It was my understanding that ibuprofen is never safe for cats, although aspirin can be given in very small doses. It's a little scary the vet apparently isn't aware of that
