How do I stop them wrecking xmas tree??

I'm putting my xmas decorations up this weekend and I just know they are going to want to play with the tinsel and the decorations!!
Took the box of decorations out the loft and already they have pulled tinsel out and left it all over the house! (and I dont think this is just their way of telling me its time to put the decorations up!!)

I usually have a bit of tinsel around the kitchen window but this year I will only put lights there as the cats have free run of the kitchen.

Sometimes we shut them out of the living room (if there is washing hung up or something) but occasionally, if they really want to get in they open the door by bashing into it.

How am I going to stop them pulling my tree down?!! My OH says ok well dont put a tree up! (he hates xmas) but with a 3yr old that just isnt an option. plus i love xmas decorations! lol

Re: How do I stop them wrecking xmas tree??

Hi,

Our two are the same and like nothing more than climbing up our tree! I got a good tip from this forum which was to give them a quick squirt with a water pistol or spray gun and they'll soon learn they are not allowed to do it. So far it has worked with our two kittens!

Alternatively, can you keep them out of your living room for a couple of weeks? I know you mentioned they try to get in but is there another area of the house you could put them where they would be content?

Good luck!

Re: How do I stop them wrecking xmas tree??

I'm just going to put mine up at the weekend and see what happens! When Mai Tai is in a playful mood she charges round the room at ninety miles and hour, across the backs of the sofas and along the window sills so I don't think the tree will stand much chance but I have to have one. I usually have a set of Playmobil nativity figures on the chest of drawers too but she does a flying leap from the back to the sofa onto the chest so I think that may be out this year!

Re: How do I stop them wrecking xmas tree??

I have a spray can - called pet corrector - I seldom use it as i only have to get the can out to get a result - all it does in dispell a gush of air with a noise - seems to discourage bad habits.

Or maybe if you did not want to buy one of those youi could shake a jar of stones.
