Considering fostering

My mum and I have been talking about doing fostering for young kittens at CP, not sure about older cats as our 4 may not take to it well. I have a large room big enough to house food, cat tree, litter tray etc so we've pretty much got it planned out

Just wanted to ask about the fostering process to people who have done it, and the experience of it all

Re: Considering fostering

A lot depends on the rescue you foster for, each has different policies.

Where I help will only foster animals that are in a strict recovery/quarantine period or are extremely aggressive or skittish so need additional handling to calm them before re-homing. You don't get a choice as to cat, breed, age, temperament it just gets given to you and you're expected to love it as 1 of your own. The cat will go back to the rescue before re-homing so your address is never given out to potential owners. That's just ours anyway.

I'll be honest fostering isn't for everybody. It can be heart-breaking to let the cat go at the end of the foster period. For me it's about improving the quality of the cat's life so they are ready to go to their forever home (almost like a half-way house) so it's very rewarding to see them go. Other people, like my Mum and Grandma are the other way, they see it as a pet, get very attached and very upset when they leave.

I love it and don't see myself giving up anytime soon, but everybody is different. It needs some serious thought.

Re: Considering fostering

If you can get hold of a copy, I would suggest reading this book.

The puppy that came for christmas by Megan Rix.

It's based on a true story about puppy parents who foster and train helper dog puppies. See how the story affects you and that will probably help to show whether fostering is for you or not.

For me it made me even more adamant that fostering/rescuing was my thing and has just made me more determined.
