Older cat scared by new kittens

Our 8 year old neutered male cat Boris has been on his own for two years since his brother died, and last weekend we were offered two eight week old kittens to keep him company.

We have been following all the advice about introducing them slowly, but rather than being aggressive to them in any way, he is actually terrified of them. The little boy kitten desperately wants to be friends with Boris, but it is making him very scared.

Any thoughts and suggestions gratefully received!!

Hello and welcome QueenAgree with Rotties, sounds like he's bemused and a little bewildered at them which is fine,as rottie said give them time and am sure they'll be buds, you'll probably find they give him a new zest for life tooAny pics of Boris and his siblings?

Re: Older cat scared by new kittens

Poor Boris, I am sure he will come round. New babies can be overwhelming, but if you make sure he knows he is still loved and give him loads of individual attention, and make sure he has his own space if he needs it, then he will see the benefits of having young brothers.

At 8 yrs old he is young enough to enjoy a good game. Older cats always look very impressed at little babies playing abilities. See if you can engage them all in a game with a rod toy like a Da Bird. Don't force the issue, but if Boris can see the two playing from a safe place, I doubt it will be long before he can resist joining in. Once their minds are wholly on the game in hand, they forget that sat next to them is an interloper or two.

It can take several weeks for exisiting cats to completely accept new babies, so its still pretty early days. Just when you think they are never going to accept each other, you will turn around one day and suddenly find them in a heap asleep together, with a look of "yeah so" on their faces

Thanks for the replies... have put a photo of Boris and our new kittens Bodie & Doyle. Bodie is a little girl, but we liked the names!

Am just going to keep introducing them slowly and letting Boris have a lot of love and a good sniff around....

At least they aren't fighting

Re: Older cat scared by new kittens

Our boy Gizmo is a bit scared of Mai Tai. She just wants to play with him but I think she moves a bit too quickly for him! When he's asleep she sits and stares at him in adoration but he won't play - just 'huffs' and walks off when she comes up to him and looks bemused when she's running around like a loony! At least like yours, they don't fight.
