Best grooming supplies

Okay, so the dogs chewed up our brush. It was the sort with the wire slicker sort on one side and the soft bristles on the other. Now, it has no handle, although all the bristles are unscathed, miraculously. But it's a little hard to use. This forces me to consider purchasing new brushes and since we have a variety of lengths and textures, I thought I would call upon the collective wisdom of all you lovelies to help us out. What are the essentials? What works really well for you?

First, what we're dealing with: We've got 4 short hair and 4 semi-long hair. Gwennie (short hair) has the very plush BSH kind of coat and she sheds all year round. Blake and Jezebel are of the Maine Coon sort of coat. And Chaucer, and it appears Milton too, have very fluffy silky coats of the sort I think Ragdolls have. All of them are getting brushed (or have been while the brush was functional), but Chaucer has developed a couple of small mats under his armpits which I think are mostly because his fur is so silken and fine that when his arms move, it just kind of clumps.

So, with that in mind, what would you recommend?

thank you xx

Oh come on! 55 views and not one of your brushes your cat? None of the raggie slaves have a favorite brush that they know works especially well on them?

Re: Best grooming supplies

I'm keen to hear suggestions too. I have a furminator and zoom groom for my ocicats but need something new for my selkirk rex. I've been recommended a slicker brush and wide toothed comb but never had a cat that needed much grooming before

Re: Best grooming supplies

OK

I have a furminator, but it isnt very well received by my long haired Persian.

She will accept slicker brushes, and I can use the Mikki Matt Master if she has a matt under her belly. I also use a rake with retracting tynes for her underbelly.

I like to use a small comb on her paw/legs and around the face.

Most of my tools are Mikki ( from P@H)

Thanks Ella

I guess I was worried about the slicker types being too pin like, so it's good to know that your cat (who was a little skittish to begin with) is okay with it. And she doesn't mind the de-matting tool?

Re: Best grooming supplies

Ok only just saw this post. I have a double sided brush one side which is a slicker and one side which is a bristle brush. Once a week I use the slicker side to get out any knots and tangles and then use the bristle brush to smooth his fur and make it all soft and shiny. I also use one of my old paddle brushes just for a bit of daily grooming (Jaffe isn't very good at doing it himself ) and that just keeps the shedding down plus he really likes the way it feels and has become a bit more tolerant of being groomed.

Re: Best grooming supplies

furminators are ok for short haired cats.. but i would'nt do any of my raggies or any LH cat.

slicker..pin brush a comb and a dematting tool of some description... really thats all you need.

as long as you keep up the brushing.. and i mean daily if possable.. especially for the longer haired cats.. ie.. persians and LH selkirk variants ect.

Re: Best grooming supplies

She's got a short coat and is very tolerant of us combing her. Still working on the rest - she can get a bit of a messy bottom poor girl In fact the breeder nicknamed her Messy

Will pick up a nice slicker brush for her asap and start getting her used to it
