Annual Check Up

Sorry for a probably obvious question but are these done on a cat's birthday or the annual date of first (or second) vaccinations?

Furbies were born 19 February, but their last vaccination was done on 9 May - which date should I arrange for their booster injections and insurance required check up?

Registering with the new vet but thought I would double check this to ensure I had some info prior to the general visit.

We just had our annual check up last month - it is a year from their last vaccinations/check

Hope that helps

Re: Annual Check Up

Meeko went for his booster and annual check 12 months after his 2nd vacc.He was sent a reminder card from the surgery.Probably best to just check with your new vet, they will need to ask for their records to be sent anyway from your previous vet.Hope you are getting settled in to your new house okay.

Re: Annual Check Up

I use the date of vaccination
The girls get a check up before going to stud too and Mai Tai has been when her kittens get their first vaccinations. Rosie will too when she has kittens.
I'm sure your new vet will give them a health check when you register with them. Hope you find a good new one

Thanks everyone

Yes, we have all settled in to the new place well, and the Furbies seem to love the place. They seem to have found many relaxation spots, and I have put mats and radiator beds in the study, playroom and kitchen so they can hang around with us in comfort. They are very 'people' cats and seem happiest when in the company of us. Oscar's favourite game is to sneak into any open kitchen cupboard and sit on oven trays/food/recycling bins. He has also learnt to climb on a table/high spot and then go onto his hind legs when I pass to allow me to lift him to my shoulders and then nuzzles into my hair.

I have found a GP practice for us humans and registered the Furbies with a new vet (one with their own in house OOH care). I will be going in on Saturday for a free check up and to get some more worming tablets/flea treament. I have their vaccination records, but have given the name of our former vets.

Anyway better dash - I have a train to catch....x

Re: Annual Check Up

its the date of the vacs

Just a tip some vets let you go over by 3 months incase you forget so there is a bit of le-way, but if you go over this 3 months you need to re-do them again.

My vet sends a little card to remind me

My vet does too but I always put the future dates in my calendar on my phone and laptop a week before they are due, just in case

No matter what some vets might tell you, there is absolutely no reason a previously vaccinated adult cat would need to have the "kitten" series of vaccinations again. The whole reason the kittens get a series of shots, is because the age at which they stop being protected by maternal antibodies (which interfear with vaccinations) is different with all cats so you need to try to catch them once the maternal antibodies are no longer effective, but likewise not to let them go unprotected for too long.

The 9 & 12 week recommendation (or in the case of Norway 12 & 16 weeks) is to try to get the best of both worlds - the first vaccination is to catch any who's maternal antibodies have already worn off, the second to catch those who's first vaccination was ineffective - likewise the 3rd one 12 months later is to catch those few kittens that had longer lasting protection from mum. It's one of the reasons that even those people that advocate boosters for adults cats be given less often than annually, still recommend that all kittens receive those first 3 shots.

As those antibodies will have more than worn off by the time the cat is 12 months old, there is no logical reason that a series of shots is needed, as they will receive the same immunity from a single dose as they would from the series.

I understand what your saying, but the vets over here just wont do it, I never received a card for one of my indoor cats, no excuse just plainly forgot, so I booked her in for when I took the kittens, and they refused to give her a booster, I quickly called another vets, who said the same so I had to re-do it again! aprt from the cost the stress of two vacs again worried me - they dont like the car/carrier.

So I asked why and they just said we missed the window, didnt really get a explanation, so I had to do it again as I breed/show and they need to be up to date, its my own fault for forgetting, I do rely on the card they send and should have written in on a calendar really!
