Unfortunately, in that case, you have no choice but to go along with the vets...it's a pity that they aren't more knowledgeable in areas such as this & nutrition, but as I said in another thread, they do have to treat a wide variety of species, so it's hard for them to specialise in any one area. In doing some research into vets in Australia (I was checking to see what vaccinations are comonly given in Australia), I did find one that just treats cats so if we end up moving to that area (I have family in the area so it's one of the places we're considering) I will be taking my boys to them but til then I'm just hoping I can get our current vet practice to see things at least mostly my way with regard to the care of my boys.
