Question Please help! Cat scared of everything!!!

Hi guys.

I have had both my cats for 6 monthes now. They are about a year old.

When rogue arrived he was being sick everyday near enough, and he was the more nervous of the two, shy and quite.

We took him to the vets lst year and he had a stomach ulcer from his nervous disposition.

The vet gave us 3 types of medication to give him twice a day. Immediatly his nerves got worse, His stomach ulcer has now healed and he has been given a clean bill of health.

But his nervous behavour is now getting worse by the day. It was over 2 month ago since his treatment so i cannot understand why he is behaving this way. Its as if he was only friendly when he didnt feel well and now he is better, this is what he is truely like.

Recently he has started biting my other cat skunk on the back of her neck and trying to hump her. Skunk now stays well away from him and hisses and shrieks at him when he goes near her.

Our day starts with me getting up and letting skunk out the dining room (as she crys at bedroom door all night) Rogue used to sleep all day either under the bed or on it in the loft. So we started bringing him down in an effort to socialise and try to comfort him. We stay in living room for about 2 hours playing with skunk in morning with her teddy, trying to get rogue interested and just giving skunk a cuddle.

Rogue will hide behind the chair the whole time. If we try to stroke him, he flattens himself with his ears back. So we just leave him to it and ignore him.

Then we go to town to go shopping and come back. When we go into the dining room to take our coats and shoes off he runs around the room trying to get away or hides in his litter tray with his own mess. and the whole day is basically like this.

Sometimes he does come for a cuddle, he lays on his back and lets u give him a belly rub, (isnt this a sign of trust?) And you can put your head on his chest and snuggle for a good couple hours like that. You get up to make a cuppa or something and he jumps off and runs up the wall trying to get away.

I pick my phone up he runs, i walk to the kitchen he runs, i sneeze and he runs..............

I tried ptting him outside during the day and he hides under the bush all day long and we cannot get him in till the next day. So he sits in the pouring rain all night under a bench getting soaked because we cannot get him back in the house.

So we cannot let him out? Feliway dont work either. Makes no difference.

The thing is I do not see this situation getting better, he is scared all the time, skunk is beginning to suffer, skunk now hates him because he keeps trying it on (both are done). And im scared his stomach ulcer will come back and i have to medicate him again which will make him even worse and its just a horrid cycle.

We have never laid a hand on him save to medicate him, he gets treated the same as skunk but he just runs and hides.

What can i do, im beggining to think our household is just too busy for him and he would be better off with a single person in a quite household.

Because his health is suffering and now skunk is suffering.I think rehoming would be the kindest thing to do.

Any advice on what i can do? What would you do?

Re: Please help! Cat scared of everything!!!

Hiya

I have a scaredy-cat too!

I got her in August and she was very timid, sleeping under the bed and scurrying around away from me. She had had a few problems prior to me getting her from Cats Protection, and had been mistreated, so had trust issues.

She got out in October (long story) and was missing for 10 days, but I got her back, and although she was happy to be at home, she was still spooked by lots of things.

I have 2 feliways going (up and down) and this didnt make much difference. Before she went missing, I had got her playing with Da Bird rod toy - to get her used to being around me and playing.

I have tried her on Royal Canin Calm dry food (from vet advice but you can buy online too) for the past month or so, and she is much happier and confident. It contains an enzyme that you can buy separately (Zylkene) but the enzyme mimics the soothing effect of their mothers milk. I cannot rate the food highly enough, I now have a cat that isnt hand-shy, and comes and sits near me and will come into a room even with strangers in it - unheard of.

May be worth asking your vet? Here is the link Calm CC 36 - Royal Canin
