What age of kitten is best

We are thinking of getting a new kitten(s) to join our 2 year old female cat. We have seen one that is 6 months old. Do you think this would be too old. Would we be better getting younger ones and would 2 boys be better than a girl and a boy.

Re: What age of kitten is best

I've just got a 5 month male old kitten to join my 2 1/2 year old female cat. So far everything has gone really well, there were a few hisses and growls to start off with but they're fine with each other now. So I wouldn't say 6 months is too old. They're still as boisterous, but that little bit bigger so I suppose they stand a better chance if there were any fights.
However I do think there's merit in getting 2 kittens instead of 1 as they can play with each other instead of annoying the older cat. But really it's up to you. As for gender, I don't think it makes a huge difference providing you get them neutered as a soon as possible.

Thanks for that IzzyTwig. Glad everything is going okay for you. Just worried that if I get another female then she and my other cat might not get on as well as if I had a male. If the kittens were one of each would it matter so much?

Re: What age of kitten is best

Last June we got a 10mth old kitten and she is absolutely adorable but my older boys (10 + 13 yrs old) wouldn't really play with her so we adopted a second boy in October. He was approx 14-16 mths. The two of them are now bezzie mates and play together loads. You can always guarantee that when one is in a state of mischief, the other is usually not very far away. (Like within 3"..... )

Up to the age of 2, most cats will adjust to new additions quite well. After that, a bit of extra work may be required. It really depends on the nature of the older cat.

If you do decide to get 2 slightly older kittens, just make sure the rescue you get them from has a neutering policy as, after 5 mths, they can be sexually active and you don't want to end up with a few more kittens that you bargained for......

Re: What age of kitten is best

Don't worry wouldn't dream of going anywhere other than a rescue centre. Have contacted Cats Protection and have been to see an adorable 6 month old boy (neutered) who gets on well with the foster's resident cat and is friendly and gentle. We now have to decide whether to go with him or go and see a young male and female kitten or wait for 2 male kittens.

Just thought if we wait for 2 male kittens to come along it might not be for at least another couple of months and in all that time Gem is getting older and more used to being on her own.
