I need creative answers please

Ok, so I went for my usual visit to the shelter and while we were there I noticed a cat that has been in a cage for over a year (in this shelter they arenīt normally in cages except they are adapting or donīt get on well with the others). This cat has been in the cage because she seems always angry and attacks, she has not been treated, or dewormed etc. It is impossible to get to her, she hisses anytime we open her cage to try to change her water or clean her litter box. It seems sleeping her for her pills is not a good idea as she might choke. I suggested forcing her out of the cage and 4 or 5 people with towels getting her so she can be treated and had a look at. No volunteers there. Any ideas on how to get her out and be able to get her treatment?

Re: I need creative answers please

You REALLY need to gain her trust and, after a year in a cage with next to no contact, you are going to have your work cut out for you.

She is now totally feral so you need to get advise from someone here who has experience of feral cats.

I hope her treatment is not urgent....

Poor little thing.

Re: I need creative answers please

she sees someone everyday. She just seems eternally angry, no one can approach her, she needs a flea treatment for example, ll the basics that have been impossible to do.

I agree, trust is the key. My Aunt's cat was an evil b*****d because he had been thrown out of a window. Our Aunt spent ages with him and he's alright-ish with her now but still isn't a fan of anyone else. In a temper he's put Aunt and her partner in A&E for stitches each. Some brave soul needs to do some serious socialisation with that poor little thing.

Failing that, like you said towels, and for the people holding the towels, gardening gloves. If you can at least get hold of her/him (can't remember what you said) you can use a pill-giver for the wormer or whatever the pill treatment was.

Re: I need creative answers please

To be honest I'm surprised that Zak (Aunt Sylv's cat) isn't eternally angry as well. My Aunt found him wandering so somehow bravely got hold of him and took him up the vet. He was micro-chipped so Sylv phoned the previous owner. Bloke on the end of the phone said that his daughter picked him up and the little b*****d turned around and bit her so he threw it out the window. He then asked for Aunt Sylv's address so he could come over and do the world a favour by chopping it's f*****g head off!

Some people can be horrible! Maybe this cat has had a bad past so hates people. It will take a brave volunteer like Sylv to bring them round with never-ending patience.

Re: I need creative answers please

When we went back to the cat shelter to get some worm tablets they said to hide the tablets in chicken, or shippams fish paste, that's what they do if they can't get near them. Give them a bit of paste and check they'll eat and then give them some with a pill inside. I used a combination of Katzini and paste to get our two. Otherwise crush it up in her food, I assume she isn't sharing her food with other cats.

Re: I need creative answers please

This may be the wrong way to handle this situation, but here goes.If I was asked to help this poor cat,I would ,if there was no other way to handle her, crush a sedative in to her food.Once sedated I would remove her from the crate and take her to someone who is willing and able to gain her trust and give her a reason to believe that all humans are not bad. This will never happen in her current situation.
A year stuck in a cage is no life for any animal ,this poor cat must be so traumatised and confused.
If no one can offer her any help, then sadly I think it would be a kindness to end her misery. She cannot be left for ever in this situation.

Poor cat, how big is the cage she's been kept in? If its quite small she must be going out of her mind, if she was angry to start with she must be ten times worse a year later.

Re: I need creative answers please

The cage is big, it has 2 floors. She likes being in a corner. She canīt be mixed with the rest because of her behaviour. I told them today, she shoudnīt be there any longer but no one knows how to get her out. She canīt be rehomed, the shelter is no-kill, so we are not considering pts. Everyone working there is really nice, she just wonīt let them near her. She was taken to the shelter because she was a stray being fed by a lady and the neighbours were threatening to poison the cats but we need to be able to handle her somehow.

Re: I need creative answers please

I had visions of her being in a really small cage - like a dog crate or something! Still really sad for her though. Really need someone to give her a home somewhere quiet in the hope she might gradually relax a little and learn to trust somebody.
