Unhappy eating

My new kitten Purdy is much better now, thank you all who left messages for me, my concern now is that she is rummaging for food all the time,i give her fresh food everyday with fresh water but she still wants what we all eat.I have never known this kind of behaviour from a kitten, anyone got any ideas how i can discourage her from this

Re: eating

Patience and perseverence hun, that's about it lol x

other than not letting her in the room when you eat x

she'll get there, my eldest mog used to be like that - was a right little ratbag when we were eating - he doesn't even bother with our food anymore x

Re: eating

Hi MN, every time she jumps near your food just scruff her neck and put her on the floor and ignore her,if after 2/3 times she still persists remove her for a 5 min time out into another room,be consistent and she will associate time out and being ignored with jumping on/near your food and should stop

Re: eating

my 16 weeks old is the same, although I read that using a jar with some pennies in it and shake it when they do it would help. I've tried, and it's the best "remedy" so far for me! She really doesn't like the sound of it, and i'm managing to stop her from eating our food/being naughty quite well. She seems to associate straight away what behaviour causes the punishment, as she sees me reaching for the jar when she's about to do something naughty. She even finally learnt not to bite me or scratch me too hard anymore, but just very lightly. I'm very pleased!

Re: eating

Do not give into temptation by letting her eat what you have. Say NO and move her away from the table. It takes perserverance. Cats are not supposed to eat what humans eat anyway. Our food contains ingredients that are poisonous to cats as well as dogs.

If you feed your cat your food while you are eating, you are encouraging thieving and begging. Guests will not appreciate this, young children won't have any control over what's happening and apart from the food poisoning problem your cat could become obese.

Play more with the cat and try to expose the cat to other sources of excitment.

There is also the chance that the cat has some kind of health problem. Have a vet check the cat for parasites or diabetes even. Q&A Archives - Food obsession

Re: eating

I have the same problem. I tap my on the nose and say no loudly then put him on the floor, it does work...until next mealtime or when i have friends round and he goes straight to them, but I encourage them to do the same and he soon learns.
I'm looking forward to the day when he stops it altogether, but as the others say, perserverence is needed.

Re: eating

We put Mai Tai in 'her room' while we're eating. Gizmo no longer bothers but sometimes we go to sit at the table and he's hiding on one of the chairs - big shock when you go to sit down on a fat black cushion!!!
