Adopting cat from RSPCA
Hello, this is my first post on here so go easy! My partner and I are adopting a 6 month old black and white cat from the RSPCA. We went to have a look last Saturday (7th) and found one we liked, so reserved him (subject to a home visit/check). The lady at the RSPCA said that someone would call us in a coupe of days and arrange this home check. She also said that they were trying to get through the home checks quickly at the moment and we could expect to collect our cat on Saturday (14th). Since then, we have heard nothing whatsoever.
Waffling over! What do you think about this? Is this normal for the RSPCA? Some people have told me that there have been long delays, others that the whole process has been very quick. I know it is maybe me being impatient but we are both really excited about getting our first cat and every day seems like an age this week! Thanks |

Re: Adopting cat from RSPCA
We didn't adopt from the RSPCA and so I can't really help with that but I just wanted to say congratulations on getting your first cat... and welcome to the madhouse that is cat ownership/slavery
You'll love it and I have found plenty of knowledgeable people on this forum willing to help out with questions. |

Re: Adopting cat from RSPCA
Try not to worry - same thing happened to me with the rescue we got our two from, so I no how hard it is trying not to be impatient! Sometimes they just get really busy and resources can be scarce, but don't worry, it's in their interest to find good homes for their animals as quickly as possible

Re: Adopting cat from RSPCA
Thanks for replying, My partner thinks the same as you, give them a ring and gee them up a bit.
We have decided to call him Jasper. He's not had a very brilliant life so far bless him, was in a domestic violence situation and had to be taken in by the RSPCA when the lady had to go into a woman's shelter. He's lovely though. not shy at all. In fact he's very forward and vocal. He loves cuddles and being close to you. He purrs really loudly and just wants to follow you around. As soon as we get him, ill get some pictures up. I really wish I had taken my camera with me when we went to look at him. ![]() |

Re: Adopting cat from RSPCA
I hope you and your partner make good slaves for the rest of Jaspers life. Well done for adopting.

Re: Adopting cat from RSPCA
If you can, try and do some socialisation visits between now and when you bring him home so he will get used to you, and I also think that when the shelter can see how caring you are and really want him home they will speed things up.
It certainly worked when I adopted my two ![]() If you can get in to see him, take a blanket or old tshirt from home so he can get used to your smell. OH and I had an old blanket in bed for two nights and then took it in on one of the socialisation visits. So it definitely would have smelt of us and home ![]() I would say its unlikely you'll be having him tomorrow now, as they need to complete paperwork etc, so don't get your hopes up. Our two babies have been with us now for 5 weeks today and act like they own the place... They really do make a house a home ![]()

Re: Adopting cat from RSPCA
Thank you for the advice Space Chick, I'll bear that in mind. I would like to go and see him again, I really would, but I'm just really afraid of getting too attached in case things don't work out- ie with the RSPCA.
I don't think that we will have a visit tomorrow either. The problem is, we won't pick him up on a weeknight. I don't think it's fair really as we wanted a couple of days on the weekend to get him settled in properly. So if it's not this weekend, we will be waiting another week. I just don't know if i can wait another week! |

Re: Adopting cat from RSPCA
Personally, I would be on the blower to the rescue this morning and asking them when they think it is likely they'll be able to get the visit done. Perhaps, in a "strange sort of but kind of makes sense" way they are testing just how much you really want this wee chap by waiting to see if you do actually chase them up. If you can get my drift there......
![]() I do, however, understand why you don't want to see 'Jasper' too often before getting the all-clear on the home check. Getting attached is all too easy and this little man sounds a right wee character so it would be hard to walk away from him. Good luck and please let us know how you get on. ![]()
