Re: should I get a cat?

Just as a thought ..... do you have a cat rescue centre near you? Maybe you could do some volunteer work, that way you get to spend lots of time with cats This will give you time to work on all the pros and cons of getting a cat in your situation.
Etienne and MoggyBaby like this.

Re: should I get a cat?

just a cautionary tale from a friend of mine in London

he had a severe mouse problem due to an upstairs neighbour - mice all over the place - he grew up with cats so got a cat for the smell to keep mice out of his flat at least and although he fed Mitzi she was a 'hunting' cat in that she'd been born and raised in his parents stables and used to mousing for a living.

after 2 moths he came home from work to see Mitzi drinking from her waterbowl and a mouse drinking from the other side of the bowl at same time...

for some reason Mitzi had decided she liked one particular mouse and although she had killed/seen off the rest, shis one became her best friend and they would drink together, sleep together and even apparently 'play' - he named the mouse Boris

Mitzi and Boris were good friends for nearly a year before Boris disappeared

Im not sure what mouse it is but I live in a town- do harvist mice just live in the country or towns as well?
Harvest mice should really live in the country, but as we keep building new housing estates etc, their either losing their habitats or adapting to live in ours. So yea you probably will find things like harvest mice in places where they shouldn't be.

I will look after the cat for sure anyway I would just like for it to be able to go on adventures outside as well. Thanks a lot for your advise
You really won't want it to catch this mouse then, would you? Cats don't just kill mice, they play with them and it is distressing to see. When we had cats I spent a lot of time rescuing mice they had brought inside half dead.

You would be better off with a mousetrap.
