Scent glands in cats

Hope noone minds me posting this here instead of in health chat but my mother took Alfie to the vets today because i noticed yesterday that the one side of his lip, and then later realised it was his chin too was swollen. He was eating etc, but was slower in doing so , so off to the vets he went. She said its an infected scent gland and apparently its common in cats, just wondering how common really and if its likely to recurr? Or has anyone else had any experiences with this? TBH theres still loads i dont know about cats and never even heard of this?

Thanks,
Amy.
