Holidays and cats

Is there anyone here who hasnīt gone on hols so as not to leave the little ones alone. I keep considering the options and I just dont think Iīd have fun. Yesterday I called a cattery and it seems to be the biggest in Madrid, each pen has outdoor space etc. but I just canīt imagine leaving him there, I mean what are hols if I wonīt relax from worry.

Re: Holidays and cats

I can't see myself taking a two week holiday in the sun ever again now we have Kitty and Oscar. The last time I did it was 2005 and we left Harry with a cat sitter (he was fine but he's very independent, O and K aren't). I've had the odd week away since or long weekends but nothing like a full scale holiday.

I have to admit I'm not a massive holiday fan anyway - as I've got older I prefer to stay at home for my hols and have a potter in the garden or just go away somewhere in England for a few days. I have booked four nights away in the summer hols for this year - and I'm already worrying about the cattery I had planned for O and K (but not the cat sitter for H, I know he'll be ok).

Re: Holidays and cats

I've not had a holiday for many a long year now, nothing to do with leaving the cats, it's purely my choice. As they are so nervous of strangers, they literally only see me on a day to day basis, getting someone in to feed them should I ever need to be away from home would likely be problematic.

There is a local cattery which I pass every time I go to town on the bus, and while I've never heard a word about them, good or bad, there's something about the look of the place that means I'd only use them in a real emergency.

I dropped lucky on the only time I've been away from home for more than a few hours, a 2 week stay in hospital a few years back, in that both cats I had at the time actually belonged next door and hadn't adopted me fully at the time, so went back *home* till I returned.

Re: Holidays and cats

I know exactly how you feel. I have three nervous cats and I find they do better with a petsitter than in a cattery. I am fortunate that I have a reliable cat-loving neighbour who pops in a few times a day to feed and play with them (I pay him as well so i don't feel too guilty about it). They always do fine (even though I still worry). Can you not find a reliable cat loving petsitter? They really do prefer being at home amongst the things and smells they know.

Re: Holidays and cats

Must say i love our holidays both in the summer and winter.

We have only had 1 holiday since we got them March just gone. Our holiday was in sept for 1 week, but my mum & dad cat sat for us.

We are due to go away again very shortly, - this time mum and dad are coming with us, so its off to a cattery for them not something i want to do, but i work all year to enjoy myself and have a holiday, we had our two from cp so am hoping they dont think they have been deserted. Cattery was recommend and we have been there and happy that thry will be safe and looked after. Although after mentioning cost to mum, response was "oh well thats the last time we are away together" so hopefully next time they will be cat sat again!

I have to confess it would not stop me taking a holiday

Re: Holidays and cats

I think I prefer not going anywhere, here in Spain I have never heard of a cat sitter and yesterday when I called a cattery I wasnīt convinced. They give them high premium food= RC, wet once in a while as a treat. I can take my own food but no discount, their cells are cleaned daily, litter changed but no special play etc. So Iīd have to be in the hospital for me to consider a cattery.

Re: Holidays and cats

I've gone away loads while having Oscar but we leave him at home with the lads! We are expecting our narrowboat being delivered in 2 weeks, hubby is going to do it all out inside and will be ready for summer, both cats will then come sailing with us

Re: Holidays and cats

I would be nervous about leaving them for two weeks (we are in April, but my best friend has kindly offered to stay at our house for the entire time), but I don't think it would stop me from going on holiday - I work hard for them and need regular breaks!

It would never be longer for two weeks and we are fortunate to have a lovely petsitter to call in on them twice a day. A cattery would be a real last resort.

Re: Holidays and cats

I'm getting married this year and actually not looking forward to the honeymoon as I don't want to leave my babies

I haven't raised it with the other half yet, but would probably prefer not to go for too long. I'm not big on holidays anyway.
