Best way to introduce kittens to adult cat - help!

Hi all, I am new to this site - so a big hello to everyone.

I am getting two female tonkinese kittens in a couple of weeks and have an adult male (neutered) and wondered how to go about introducing them - I am so worried that they are not going to get along!! I have looked up a lot of details and see that the main thing is taking it very slowly and introducing them gradually but if anyone has a tips they can give me that would be great!! One question is, when I first bring them into the house should I try and keep them immediatley hidden from my boy cat (Cole) or should I let him have a nose through the pet carrier door then take them up to their "safe room" where they can settle in?

Many thanks.

Hi. I'd let them have a sniff through the pet carrier when you bring the kittens in. He'll probably be able to smell them through the door of their 'safe room' anyway.
You could try rubbing them with some of his bedding so that they smell familiar.
I'm still working on my two after nearly four weeks!
The main trouble is my kitten wants to play but grumpy Gizmo doesn't so we still get hisses and occasional claws. He's at the point now where he just looks at her and gives a 'huff'. so he's tolerating her even if they're not friends.
I think slowly is the best way to go and let them mix at their own pace. Just make sure to supervise their initial encounters. I'm sure it will work out.
P.s. - lucky you - two little Tonks!! we'd love to see pictures of all your cats xx

Re: Best way to introduce kittens to adult cat - help!

we had Kizzie in the house a day or 2 before we let Tinkerbell in to see her. so Kizzie was quite settled, we have a large dog cage we put a letter tray and basket. Tink had a sniff and we didnt put them on the floor together for another day or 2 but when we did they got on great, took Tinkerbell a while to get used to her but there was NO hissing or fighting of any kinf ang Tink was soon grooming and playing with her

Think about clipping Coles claws before the kittens arrive. Just to be safe really.

Some cats get on easily, some take longer - it will depend on your cats to how long they can take x

but just slowly and with perseverence, try not to get too impatient xx

Just take it slow, I think letting your older cat have a sniff of their carrier first is a good idea, they'll soon get used to each other. At my mums we got a kitten for company for our older cat as he was lonely after losing our other cat and dog very close together and he would only come into the house to eat for about a week!! They soon got used to each other tho. Good luck

Re: Best way to introduce kittens to adult cat - help!

Hello and welcome, I got Merlin a 13 week old kitten nearly 5 weeks ago, I already had Murray a 16 year old female and Jasper a 12 year old male. I put Merlin in a large dog cage with a litter tray, carrier with bed in it, food, toys and water. Jasper took to him immediately, but Murray hissed, shouted and tried to attack him. This went on for nearly a week so I got the Feliway diffusers and spray, after a few days she calmed down but still not impressed. I let Merlin out when she wasn't about during the day, and in the evening have supervised "visits". I am pleased to say that on Monday Merlins pen was removed completely and he now has full run of the house with Murray ignoring him most of the time. All 3 now have lunch and dinner together and the house is alot calmer. I think the Feliway really helped. Murray still has the occasional hiss and little jab at him, so I just have to keep an eye out. So things do settle, but it does take time and patience, on the other hand you may be lucky and they all hit it off straight away. Good luck and I hope my experience helps you a bit. xxx

Thanks everyone - I don't know why I am getting myself so worried about it! Its almost taking away the excitement of getting the kittens. I am sure once I have done it once though our cat family will quickly grow from 3 cats to 10 hehehe.
