Re: Best way to introduce kittens to adult cat - help!

How did everything work out for you?

I am getting a male birman kitten at the end of January from the same breeder where I got Tally (Female 2 year old Birman) about 5 weeks ago. I too have been reading up with regards to the best way to introduce them. Would love to hear how you have gone on.

It went fine but unfortunatley due to illness of our adult cat (who we got from a rescue centre three months ago) we have had to take him back to the rescue centre and he is off to a foster home. I am putting a post up separatley about it. The inroduction (once he was finally interested) went fine just a few hisses. Don't worry they will all be fine! Just take it slowly.

Re: Best way to introduce kittens to adult cat - help!

Hi there,

My wife just picked up a kitten from the street outside her office, about 2 months old. We already have 2 other cats at home who tolerate each other. Took the kitten to the vet first where she got a clean bill of health and her first jabs, and then took her home.
Before putting her in the guest bedroom we let her have a peek first at the other 2, and the moment she saw our 2 y/o male, the kitten immediately raised her back and tail and started hissing! I thought it was always supposed to be the resident cat(s) that got agitated? This certainly was the case when we introduced our second cat to the first one a few years ago.
I'm just worried that the kitten will not settle. I'm normally not in favor of bringing in strays, but this one is still very young (about 2 months), and leaving her outside with the traffic without other cats in sight wasn't really an option (we live in hectic Bangkok).
Anyone got any further advice to calm the kitten down?

hi Lozzy, and welcome to the forum, If you're going to being in a new cat/kitten to the houshold then i can recommend that you buy the product FELIWAY , we have used it and it DOES work , we found the plug in type the best and ideally you need to start using it about a week before the new arrivals, Feliway is available at mot good pet stores but you will save a few pounds by buying it off ebay. i hope this helps some, best wishes...........Chris
