I think my cat has a broken tail

poor Chloe was in a cat fight on Monday night she seems to have come off a lot worse, she had blood on 3 of her paws, and a busted bottom lip, tried to coax her yesterday with some biscuits, she ate a few than she was sleeping all the time, not like Chloe at all.

noticed this morning she is not walking with her tail up high she is walking with a limp, her tail is just there it looks dead behind her I stroked her this morning and she gave out a big miaw, I've got a feeling she has a broken tail, I phoned the vet asap this morning they have fitted her in at 3.20 this afternoon, what can they do if it is a broken tail what she has, in all the years of owning cats this has never happened before so dont know what the vet will do, I'm so glad now both these have insurance so whatever needs doing it will be covered, both these are my babies to keep me company, I just feel so helpless

Re: I think my cat has a broken tail

Poor Chloe sorry no idea how or if a broken tail can be fixed hopefully she has'nt. One of my old toms years ago came in with his tail hanging off no idea how he did it but they amputated it & he was fine Good luck for later x

Re: I think my cat has a broken tail

Poor Chloe, I hope the vets can sort her tail out for her. I am amazed that a cat fight has resulted in a broken tail though. Hopefully it was a bite and it is just an absess causing the pain and discomfort - that could be enough for her to want to not lift her tail, and cause pain when you stroked her there. Is the pain right at the base of the tail, or like half way along it>

If it is at the base, and it is a break, I have a feeling it will be difficult to put in plaster/splint, but if it is further along then it could be possible. But most cats will do find with an amputated tail.

Good luck at the vets later.

Re: I think my cat has a broken tail

Did you actually see the cat fight.Have you checked her claws for scuffs, she may have been hit with a car.It would be an odd cat fight that ended up with her tail broken.Hope she is ok,good luck at the vets

no I did not see the cat fight my husband heard her trying to come in through the magnetic cat flap but she had lost her magnet she could not come in, will probably find out at the vets what 'might' have happened to her,

when I was stroking her before it was the very base of her tail right where it meets her back, I know how bad an abscess can be when our cat before these 2 Tommy had a burst abscess he had to have an operation and he had one of the lampshades on.

Re: I think my cat has a broken tail

I think it is more likely to be a bite which has resulted in infection. One of my cats had this a few years ago and there was the possibility of him needing his tail amputated but luckily anti biotics sorted it out. I still don't think he has complete feeling in the tail though as he doesn't react when you touch the bottom end of the tail
