I want to feed the birds

Hi

I have always fed the birds and my old cat who died last year wasn't much of a hunter - just an opportunist so never really had any problems.

I've now got 2 cats. One 2 yrs old and a 9 month old and they are both efficient hunters despite having bells on their collars. They kill mice and shrews and birds and more often than not they eat them just leave the odd bit.

I want to feed the birds but don't want to provide the cats with ready made meals.

Is there a safe way to feed them in future. I do have some feeders in a pyracanthas bush which has huge thorns but haven't put any food in since having the cats.. Can anyone advise if there is a way to continue to feed birds or will I have to stop?

Do you have a long washing line you can hang feeders on?

Unfortunately not. It's a rotary and the lawn slopes so when it turns part of it is always quite near the ground.

I hang my bird feeders in the trees.
You can get bird feeders that are on poles which sink into the ground.
If you have not any trees but your neighbour's have that hang over your garden you can hang them in the branches.
Or if the cats don't go out on the front of your house you can put the feeder on the front.
Also you buy window feeders that stick onto your windows.

you can get bird feeders which attach to your windows with suction cups... i have one, but unfortunately none of the birds have ever used it in the 6months it's been up :/

Re: I want to feed the birds

I've got a feeding station as we have so many squirrels the birds got nothing when the feeders were in the trees!

This is like mine, and you can get extra hooks etc if you want them

I have one of these domes on mine to stop the squirrels climbing it, I guess it would stop cats climbing too
spid and buffie like this.

Re: I want to feed the birds

I have that one too - but then my bird feeder is also outside of the run.

Re: I want to feed the birds

There's a couple of trees/bushes in the garden but they can climb them. Maybe one of the poles would be a good idea.

They go out the front but that's where the big prickly bush is and I have feeders in there but not used them since I've had these two just in case. As it has evil thorns would that be enough to stop them? Also get a lot of blackbirds which are ground feeders and always gave them mealworms. Thought I'd try putting some mealworms down the other day and the cats ate them!! Also I would imagine the blackbirds would be at risk if I do it.

As I say they both have collars with bells on...
