Changing litter question

Hi all - We're going to be changing our litter from Catsan Hygiene to Okoplus - can you just change the litter outright or does it have to be a gradual change?

Re: Changing litter question

All cats are different, mine is very good at using the litter tray we've never had a single incident even when she's been ill touch wood. Whenever i've changed brands I've always just done a straight up complete change and never had any problems whatsoever but I guess it depends on how fussy your cat is.

I think most would probably recommend a transition period mixing a bit of the new litter with the old and increasing quantities but i'd be inclined to just change it completely and see how you get on, if they show any reluctance to use it you can easily revert back and then go with the mixing in option.

Remember to put a good depth of the Oko in, the trick is the keep it at least 4 inches deep.

oh and by the way.. OKOplus tracks! :P badly! It might last a while but unfortunately for some people (like myself ) its impossible to hoover every day so its a massive no-no to me.. im gonna finish using the bag Ive got and im changing!
I could find this litter being stuck to my leather sofa and had to keep wiping it with a wet cloth.. It gets stuck to cats' paws and they carry it everywhere.. It was bad enough when we only had Charlie, now we also got Dennis..

Well.. anyway.. I hope you wont have same problems lol x

Re: Changing litter question

Thanks all! We've been having a few 'accidents' since we got Basil & Sybil about a month ago and changing the litter is the latest thing am trying. They use their boxes 99% of the time but on occasion one of them (don't know which one!) will decide to go on the sofa or on the laminate floor in the hallway. This tends to happen once or twice a week. We've tried putting kitten attract in the trays, adding a third tray (there's two downstairs and one upstairs), totally changing the litter twice instead of once a week (need to with Catsan!)

So am thinking they may prefer something finer than Catsan and something where you can remove urine as well - fingers crossed!

I am worried about the Oko tracking though - considered Nature's Gold but read reviews about the clumping not being as good as Oko and cats not liking the bigger pellets

Yep, this is it.. Ive started on Pura moonlight - really nice litter, doesnt track much (i can only find bit of it right outside the litter tray door on the mat), but i believe it should be fully changed every week, week and a half.. it gets really dusty.. I've noticed my cats sneezing just after couple of days of cleaning the tray completely - and this is not a good sign.. So I decided to change to OKO plus as everyone was recommending it, most of the reviews on the zooplus website were brilliant but unfortunately for me it wasnt working. We live in 1bed flat and both cats are indoor only so they only do their business at home..
As i said earlier I could wake up one morning and find litter on the kitchen tops, sofa, my bed.. Yes it does last long but for me its not worth it..

Im looking now at Cats Best Nature Gold and World's Best Cat Litter.. And again, some reviews got 5 starts, others got only 1.. I believe its all up to individuals.. If you cat is an outdoor cat you probably wont notice much of the tracking..

Re: Changing litter question

I think you might struggle to mix Catsan and OKO due to the different types of litter that they are so I would suggest doing 1 litter tray with Catsan & the other with OKO. Then after a couple of weeks, remove the Catsan altogther.

Kat1703 - re your concerns on Natures Gold. The clumping is still very good although not quite as tight as OKO. They can be quite big so I just chop them in half in the tray and then flush as normal. All four of my cats were ok with the pellets, if that helps at all.

Re: Changing litter question

Thanks for letting me know about the Oko tracking issues! Not sure am up for all that litter on sofas, counter tops etc (our kitties literally get everywhere).

The Catsan tracks a bit but not too far away from the tray.

Perhaps the kitties are more concerned with urine staying in the tray with the Catsan so may give Nature Gold a try first and see how it goes.

I'll get to the bottom of their litter issues one day!!
