Fireworks

I am a new owner and only just thought about tonight being new years eve. I have just read the sticky on Bonfire night which mentions the Feliway diffuser but is there anything I can do for my kitten at such short notice.

For me new years eve is very over rated, but every year there will be lots fireworks going off near me, well into the early hours.

Re: Fireworks

My cat has always been fine but every cat is different. I usually put the tv on a little louder than usual and put a radio on upstairs. I find feeding them a slightly larger wet meal usually makes them a bit dosy too lol so Eric goes to sleep for most of the evening!

Re: Fireworks

As suggested above, I draw the curtains/blinds early and have tv on a bit louder than usual. On Bonfire Night mine ignored all the fireworks except for one exceptionally loud banger which seemed to go off right outside the window. The main thing is to get outdoor cats in before dusk.

It's over rated for me too. After working Christmas Day until 10pm and Boxing Day until midnight I'm looking forward to a Chinese takeaway and curling up on the sofa with the cats and my son

Re: Fireworks

Cookie sleeps for most of the evening as well just not sure what she does or where she sleeps when I go to bed, if I get up during the night she is sat outside the door on the landing.

Re: Fireworks

One advantage of living in a city where the centre and close surrounds consists of largely wooden buildings, it's illegal to set off fireworks in large parts of the city due to the fire risk. We are in one such area, something for which, having just heard someone let one off, (it's only midday and won't even be fully dark for another 2-3 hours), I am greatful for.

That being said, living 20m from one end of a road tunnel currently under construction, our two have become used to blasting. Some days they set off as many as 5-6 explosions near this end (large enough to give the house a good shake), plus at least that many near the other end (which we barely hear or feel unless they are particularly large). Added to how curious my 2 are about every sound (being a basement flat we have the rubbish bins and mailboxes right outside one set of windows), I expect them to spend most of the night up on the window sill having a stickybeak.

As for what to do, best advice I've seen is for mostly outdoor cats get them in early, and lock them in (at least til 1am when most of the fireworks will have died down). Also make sure your furbabies have somewhere "safe" to go hide if they so desire.

How wonderful it must be to live somewhere like that. I live in the east end of London where idiots throw fireworks at people in the street because they think it's funny. There will be quite a few later on.

Re: Fireworks

Make sure they are inside the house, if they're kittens then I imagine they're being kept in anyway. Close curtains and stuff, TV on louder as others have said.

I know it sounds mean but I've always avoided comforting mine when the fireworks are about. Like if they get scared don't rush over and give them lots of fuss and attention, you're kind of teaching them there's something to be scared of. If they want to go and hide, let them, but just remain quite chilled out yourself. I completely believe that they pick up on what we are feeling, so if you're not worried, they shouldn't be too bad.

It's always worked for me anyway, but every cats different.

Re: Fireworks

Luckily none of mine bother with fireworks as a rule. The only time an ear will flicker or a head will be raised with wide eyes, is when the sooper dooper loud ones go off. And as they even make me jump.....................

Keep curtains closed, nearer the time try to keep your kitten in a room with the fewest amount of windows - for example, our hallway is in the middle of the house with no outside walls so any loud noises outside are muted - and turn up either your tv or music just enough to dull the bangs.

Hopefully, your little one won't be too fussed by them all.

Re: Fireworks

keeping my Dora in tonight, fireworks going off already and i dont want to take any chances. She desperately wants to go out,but no way.

When i had dogs one of them was absolutely terrified of loud bangs, thunder ect. During as storm he would be petrified and i would have to almost peel him off the ceiling. As has been said, dont make a big issue of it as you will be reinforcing the fact its something to be scared of.

Hubby was listening to the police radio earlier - apparently we had a group doing something of the sort near one of the bridges to Midtbyen (Mid Town) - (the centre of the city sits on an island at the mouth of the river Nidelva), so just goes to show "idiot" is a universal species.

We also had a few go off near us, which shouldn't have happened but is unsurprisning tbh. As expected though, when I went to check the boys, Oslo was sitting on the windowsill and Odin was curled up on the couch completely unfazed.
