Re: millie
It might not even be a step backwards. She just might be a neurotic cat who is very sensitive to any changes at all and she might always be this way.
The cat I told you about yesterday, Tess, was one of those. I think she was left with some brain damage as a result of a high fever as a small kitten, but whatever the reason, she was sweet and wonderful and friendly and affectionate to people she knew very well, but any change at all just pushed her over the edge. If any visitors came to the house, she would hide for hours and had to be convinced the coast was clear and she could reappear. After one of my many moves, she found a tiny hole in the storage room and disappeared up into the rafters and hid for about a day in the insulation. The next day, she found a way behind the upright freezer and squashed herself in there. She was so wary of strangers that even a delivery man could make her hide for an hour.
I'm wondering if your daughter leaving was enough to make her feel unsettled especially since she's only recently been rehomed with you. Did her dad come to get her, or did you drop her off? Either way, it's still a change, and I'm sure you're feeling a little lonely without your daughter, so she might even be picking up on that as stressful. You never know with cats.
