Never been the vets so much!

I have never been to the vets so many times as I have this year! I can't moan as this is the most Oscar has ever cost me in the last 18.5yrs.

We went last week to have his claws clipped and I mentioned that one of his eyes was a bit gunky....I wasn't that worried as his breed are prone to weepy eyes. Imagine my shock when the nurse told me she thought he had an ulcer on his eye

So we went on Monday evening, saw a really lovely Vet, who confirmed that he has in fact got an ulcer. So one dose of a systemic anti-biotic and some eye cream later, we came home. We had to go back today to see how things are going and the vet I saw today is slightly baffled!

Looking at the ulcer she felt that it was a lot deeper than first thought but after putting some dye in Oscar's eye, she said that it was more superficial as the dye only very lightly clung to the outer ring of the ulcer. She thinks its healing from the inside out.

So he has proper eye drops, 1 every 2/4 hours, with a dose of eye cream before bedtime. He's not in the least bit bothered by it, he's not rubbed his eye or shown any signs of distress.

We're back off to the vets next Wednesday so they can see how things are progressing.

Thank goodness for my Christmas bonus

At least you are keeping watch and taking care of Oscar! Hope he makes a full and speedy recovery.

Re: Never been the vets so much!

at least it was caught early and only a bit sore/gunky - ulcers in the eye can *quickly* turn nasty and very painful - and from the timing from that it would probably have been right in Christmas that you would hae been getting emergency vet fees - owie for you *and* kitty!

however caught early, treated easy and (relatively) cheaply smiles all round really well done on being so observent

So far £78 but its a small price to pay for treating something as fragile as his eye.

He's been so good with the eye drops as well, barely pulling away when I go in for the squirt

Re: Never been the vets so much!

Gosh that sounds just like my Buster! He had a swollen eye too and the vet was all doom and gloom and thought it might be a tumour but because of his age 15 (at the time) the vet thought that it best to have a suck it and see approach. Anyway, a few days later whatever was behind his eye burst and a load of "stuff" came out. I'm not sure what it was as I was down with my mum leaving Buster home alone with my husband.

We had another appointment with the vet the following week to see how things were going and he said that "whatever" was behind his eye has made itsself out so its looking really postive.

Don't give up just yet he may be a tough soldier and be ok.18.5 is a great age for a cat. I often wonder how old my 16 year old moggie Amber would have lived to if she didn't get mauled to death my a Staffie

What a brave little boy he is. He certainly has confidence in you to allow you to do this.
