Re: help... :(

My cat Loulou used to come everywhere with me when I went home to visit, she has stayed at my Aunts house, my grandmother house and sister's house, she loved it, but my word you have to be extra careful, doors, windows etc

keep us dated.

Re: help... :(

I was like you, I lived miles away from all my friends and family, It is hard when you don't have anyone to help out, or know anyone to recommend someone. As I said, I took Loulou with me when I could other times she went in a cattery.

You can find solutions, when you do you'll not worry as much about her to.

Good luck..

Re: help... :(

This is such a long period of time to leave your cat all by itself

I am actually quite shocked and I think it is very sad

With regard to the food, well the cat doesn't know how long you are going to be away for and certainly doesn't know how long it has to make the food last for. So, what happens if it eats it all in one day? You won't know though will you - in fact you won't know anymore than we know, whether it ate all the food in the first hour, first day or made it last for 4 days.

When you leave it, is it allowed to go in lots of different rooms or is it restricted?

How often do these 3 to 4 day away trips occur?

Re: help... :(

You've had lots of good advise and clearly know that leaving her alone so long is not an option as you have posted on here for a solution.

I would just add that there are a few risks in rehoming her without proper home checks and it might not be as simple to find the righ home as you think. Also your situation might change, you may not be alone longterm for example, and you might well regret letting her go when you have such a bond. A possibility might be to get another cat or kitten for company and use a cattery for the two of them. However, they may not get on and she might prefer you all to herself. If you always used the same cattery they would know her and build up a bond with her so that she gets used to the routine and gets attention all the time. Cattery's are quite tightly controlled so you shouldn't expect her to get fleas etc.

The taking her with you plan is a good one too. I hope it all works out for you both.

Oh bless you both.

Whilst I can't condone you leaving your cat alone, it is evident from your posts that you love her very much. I can understand your reluctance to put her in a cattery but as above it would be better than leaving her alone but I think you know that so I won't beat the welfare stick.

Practically speaking, we live miles from family and lack of sitters meant one day we just decided to take Fat with us. He got used to travelling very quickly, settled happily at my parents and shame of all shame he went caravanning with us too.

Do you have set hotels you have to stay in? I only ask as my colleague is single so when she goes down to Southampton to visit her son at Uni she finds that B&b's are more accommodating to her dog than hotels.

Alternatively I bet you aren't the only person in your circle of friends, colleagues who has this concern! I am hoping my new cat will adapt to travelling but if not I will be asking around the quarters to find an exchange carer......ie I look after their cat while they are away and they look after mine.

Even asking around your flats might yield someone!

Good luck with it and your cat is beautiful! I am a real BSh lover and she is lovely.

Re: help... :(

I hope you find a solution to suit you both. I am sure you can find a pet sitter trustworthy enough to visit your house to feed while you are away and catteries are always about.

Re: help... :(

Have you ever tried to find a sitter?
You may be surprised how easy it could be.....
When you tell people (friends, acquaintances, colleagues) about her, you must come across other cat lovers.... There may be people who would love to have a cat but have a partner or child who is allergic.... You would actually be doing someone like that a favour by allowing them to look after your furbaby.

I cannot help you in that respect, I live in Holland, but over here, I am a volunteer for a local cat rescue, we provide a holiday service, not only for cats rehomed by the rescue, but for all members and sponsors of the rescue foundation.

When I go on holiday, my cleaning lady loves looking after them, she has been promoted their furry godmother. And I have a good friend, who is also a neighbour, we mutually look after each other's cats. Only, the last couple of years, we would be away simultaneously, so my cleaning lady stepped in to spoil my lot rotten......

I can't imagine there are no people like that, who consider it a treat to care for someone's cat, around where you live. The problem is finding them......

I feel bad not being able to give her all the love in the world an seriously want to give her a good home... so what would you all do? I don't have anyone local that could look after her when i'm away from home, and I don't really trust random people to have access to my home.

I live in bedfordshire - should I sell her on?!!!
what if u get her little friend? maybe another kitty would be the answer x

Re: help... :(

It would be nice for her to have a friend, but even with 2 cats, it isn't wise to leave them alone for 3 to 4 days.....
They would still need a sitter to come in every day.
