Big time fail

made appointment to get little stray kit to vets today for vaccinations, health check ect. As she is so timid my intention was to drop a towel over her, pick her up and get her into the carrier,oh how wrong i was

Almost got her into the carrier but she wriggled away, ran up the stairs, closely followed by a hissing Dora and me in pursuit. She then made a bid for freedom by launching herself from the stairs onto the sideboard, sending things flying.Dora really didnt need to stick her oar in but i think she was trying to help. Little kit then launched herself at the kitchen window where i then tried to get hold of her,no luck. Poor little mite wet herself with fright. It was like something out of the Keystone cops in this house today. She is obviously a stray,so scared of people,no interaction.

She is now camped out under my bed,and i wont try to force things with her. She needs lots of time to gain trust in me. I feel so bad at scaring her today but i just wanted to do right by getting her vacs done ect .

Re: Big time fail

Leave her be, and leave the carrier in the room with her with some goodies.
This way she will associate the carrier with something pleasant.
When you do want to take her to the vet, just put hte carrier in the room and put some goodies right at the back of it,and when she is in, close the door.

That is how I do it with Wobbel......

Re: Big time fail

She is so scared of people at the moment,if i had got her into the carrier the vet wouldnt have got near her let alone be able to vaccinate her. Just going to have to take it very slowly with her.

Leaving her to just chill.

Re: Big time fail

You are quire right not to want to take her too soon. First let her get used to the carrier and get a bit less spooked around humans again.

And you might consider buying some feliway spray. I have heard of vets spraying their hands or clothes with it to appear less fearsome to feral cats.
It may be worth a try...

Poor wee thing, If only they knew when people are trying to help them.

Think your going to have to bide your time on this one, Tho a lot of treats and goodies in that carrier as others have suggested.

My vet used feliway spray and sprayed his and the nurses hands the first time I took Puss Puss for her vacinations and microchipping. Puss was good all through even when the microchip was done as that was a bit painfull for her.

Re: Big time fail

To try and gain her trust and make the association with humans a good one, get some cheap fish paste for sandwiches and a plastic chop stick, get some paste on the chop stick and sitting with your side to her so you are not threatening or looking at her offer her the paste.

This is what I did with a very timid scared couple of kittens I fostered and it worked wonders!! The paste is so smelly it is really enticing just dont give her too much in any one sitting as it may upset her tummy. HTH xxxx
