Advice re stray kitten

I have had a kitten, roughly about 3 months old ,hanging around in my garden day and night for the past couple of weeks. i am quite concerned about a kitten this young being out, especially at night in the very cold wet weather we have been having. I felt so bad i put my cats carrier out there with a blanket in it so she could have some shelter, changing the blanket every day due to it becoming damp.

Anyway,i have managed to coax her/him in this evening and seems quite happy tucked away in a corner in the warm. I cant get near her as she is so timid and scared but she will just about tentatively take some food from me.

I have made some enquiries about her but there are a number of strays round here she could well be one of many.

As a relative newbie to being owned by a cat i for one wouldnt leave a cat so young out in this bad weather,or am i just being soft ???

As long as no-one does own her and she gets on ok with my Dora i am quite happy for her to stay with me for good.

Re: Advice re stray kitten

Well done you. You could put a notice or two up in your local shop just to be on the safe side to ensure no-one is missing her but it would be lovely if she could stay where she will be cared for and loved. Let her come to you on her own terms - I am sure even in the space of a few days you will see a huge difference. Is Dora your other cat? If so - just be careful as if the kit is a stray she obviously will be unvaccinated (unwormed and in need of flea treatment to say the least!) and need a vet check up as soon as you feel she is ready for it.

Do post a piccie!

Re: Advice re stray kitten

Do please get her scanned for a microchip (the vet almost certainly will not charge for this but check first!) as it is possible she is genuinely lost. Three years ago I had a three month old kitten escape just before torrential rain. She disappeared somewhere and despite me leaving the door open for her all night she did not return. She was very much wanted and I was overjoyed when the vet called me 10 days later to say she had been handed in.

Re: Advice re stray kitten

Poor little thing - even my former feral cat who is always outside through choice hasn't been out much lately, it's too cold even for him.

I'd suggest a vet visit (once you can get near her of course) to check for chip (unlikley, I'm thinking) and injections etc.

She's a lucky girl to have found you, I'm thinking. Any owner who chucks a kitten out in this weather and at that age isn't fit to have a cat.

Re: Advice re stray kitten

i shall make some more enquries today and put a card in the local shop window, but to be honest i would hate to hand her back to someone if they are just going to put her out in the bad weather again.

At the moment she is hiding away in a corner being all shy. She has had some food and let me touch her,but wasnt too sure.As soon as she is more confident and i can handle her i will get her to the vets for vaccinations ect.

I am just a bit concerned Dora,my cat, will feel a bit put out and i dont want that. She was another little unwanted but i knew where she came from and knew she wasnt wanted by her previous owner. She has a bit of a hiss at her and just one small spat but dosnt get too near at the moment. Would be nice if they were to become the best of friends.
