New kitty?

just been on the breeder i bought Charlie from website.. She has got one blue colourpoint boy available.. now im in dilemma..
id love to get another kitty, im in love with charlie and would like him to be even happier kitty by gettin him a friend but then i think about all the expenses.. food, insurance, people say it doesnt make a difference but i dont believe this as id have to order double amount of food i order normally, or order it twice a month instead of just once a month.. id have to pay over £30 for 2, i pay just over £15 for Charlie.. But then i think.. How much i would love to have 2 cats, hopefully 2 very affectionate cats..
also.. kitty would normally be for 390, but as it still hasnt had his jabs done (he meant to go to the family abroad as a stud boy) so they are prepared to sell him for 350. Hes nearly 12 weeks old..
I really dont know what to do, what to think.. Would appreciate any advice..

Re: New kitty?

This might not be a popular opinion but I would say don't get the kittie. If an extra £30 or so a month is going to be tight for you, I would say it was not sensible to shell out £350 this close to Christmas.

You could always get a rescue kittie for much less. Although I still think if the monthly payments would stretch you, then it's not a great idea.

Re: New kitty?

Personally I have found as you say it is double the expense! I used to spend money like it was going out of fashion on Oscar with silly things but now think twice about whether it will be a waste of money etc and cos I would have 2 to buy lol!
I do enjoy having 2 cats though and go to work thinking oh well he's not on his own anymore and hopefully eventually these 2 will become great friends, it's still early days for us.
What I will say though I found it really hard watching Rosie batter Oscar when he wanted to be her friend! I seriously considered returning her that's how hard it was
Good luck in your decision

Re: New kitty?

You do have to consider the costs as you are sensibly doing. Ignoring the purchase price (which obviously isn't insignificant!), you've got double injections, neutering, flea/worming as well as food. I find I don't spend much more on food with three instead of two as I chuck far less away. However it is still more - and I spend far more on them on toys and gizmos too!

It isn't anymore work though - and it's at least twice the fun

No.. Im not saying it would be tight.. Im just saying it all adds up.. Getting this kitty would be my christmas n birthday present so its nothing to do with christmas being near etc..

I do think that Charlies life would much improve! I would like him to have a play buddy when were not there (and my and my OH work full time so were not at home for at least 8hours Monday-Friday)..

Re: New kitty?

Agree with the others, it's not double the cost of everything, but it is close. Double insurance (ok you might get a pound off for having two) and double vets costs.

It's not quite double food though, depending on how you currently buy. I found we couldn't buy 400g tins with one cat as mine are fussy about eating the same flavour twice in a row, but can with two, which saves a fair bit.

Agree with Chewie39 it is definitely more than twice the fun!

I definitely think he'd like a playmate - it's the best thing I ever did for Oscar, he and Kitty are inseperable

I feel less guilty when I go to work now.

How much do injections cost? We have already made an appointment for Charlies op when hes 6 months old.. i know that this would roughly cost £60..

Also another question.. Charlie is strictly indoor cat, windows are not open at all as we live on the ground floor and id be worried about leaving windows opened etc.. Would microchipping him be necessary?

I would still microchip because they can always accidentally get out. Even if you are very very careful, god forbid but you could have a breakin and they let the cats out. It can happen. My breeder microchipped mine for me before I got them. I paid £300 for the first pedigree BSH and £200 for the second because she was older and no-one wanted her

Sorry, don't know about the injections because mine aren't due for a bit.

Have you considered a rescue kitten - would cut down on some of the costs.
