Re: Letting Amber out for the first time tomorrow....
Well she might not want to be out for long tomorrow as it's going to be bl**dy cold - which could be a good thing!
My kittens, who come in the garden with me almost every day for half an hour or so and usually love it, have been seriously reluctant most days just lately. Sometimes they run back in almost immediately, sometimes they stand at the door and won't even step outside ![]()

Re: Letting Amber out for the first time tomorrow....
If it's the first time ever, go out with her. Walk around your garden with her and chat as she sniffs and investigates. She might do a 'Merson' on you - he took one look around him, bolted back indoors and wouldn't come out from under the bed for ages!!! The following weekend, he was champing at the back door, desperate to be let out and has been like that ever since. He adores 'outside'. It may be a wee while before she goes off properly adventuring.
Is your garden cat-proofed to keep her in or are you allowing her to free-roam?

Re: Letting Amber out for the first time tomorrow....
well you should already have a re-call in place so she comes to you when you call her, she should NOT be going out until 10-12months of age, certainly NOT 10days after spaying!!! Say another cat attacks her? wont do well for her scar/stiches
you should supervise and only take her out for 2 minutes, and build it up over the weeks to 30mins, always with her, until the door can be openned without you. that being said you should wait until spring as its way to cold now esp if she bolts, and until she is over a year old and you must have a recall, mine come on commany do a whistle & 3 different name calls, all taught before they were let out.

Re: Letting Amber out for the first time tomorrow....
If your garden is cat-proofed, then she can go out now but you must spend time with her to begin with so that she doesn't get scared by all the new stuff.
If you are allowing free-roaming, then TB & Buffie have given you the very best advice possible. Also, once she is allowed out freely, invest in lots of Rescue Remedy because you will need it to cope with the stress when you haven't seen her for 2 hours, or she doesn't respond to you for over half an hour because she is busy or she gets locked in a shed for 3 days or she decides she would rather play by the roadside than in the garden......... ![]()

I am not letting mine out as we are by a busy road, but I heard it best not to let them out on there own until they are at least 10 months. Maybe a harness would be a good place to start, supervised walk. |

Re: Letting Amber out for the first time tomorrow....
Hi everyone,
Thanks your advice. As i said before I have spoken to the vets and she has said Amber is fine to be let out. She has no stitches now and the scar has healed well. I get the feeling you are all under the impression i intend on shoving her out the door and closing it for a few hours. I will of course stay with her, and it will only be for 5 mins tops. We have an enclosed garden and are not near a busy road. Amber is going 'stir crazy' inside so I just wanted to give her a taste of the outdoors so she wouldn't be so mad inside! Thanks again and I have taken on board all that has been said. |
