maine coon advice please...

i think we may have finally found our perfect fur-baby! its very close between three of them... just waiting to hear back on one of them.

we have a 6 month old cat wed love to have a play-mate for her. shes very sociable. weve looked for a while now and for around 2 months have searched for our perfect maine coon as this will be the last one im allowed

weve found 2 adults... one is 4 years old... hes beautiful! but i wonder if hell be set in his ways i dont think there are any other cats in the house....

we found a beautiful 1 year old girl but the ad does say shes getting stressed with the other cats.. now i only have one so im not sure ?? but then i wonder if shell like my children??? or they will be too noisy?

we also found some mc kittens also.

just weighing up the pros and cons and will talk to the o/h when hes home.

im used to my average size cat so im wondering how much should a maine coon be eating? if we were to keep him/her indoors would you take the cat out for a walk on a harness??? we have a pretty big house so im not worries about our new moggie having her/his own space but do they to excerise?? or not ??would you buy him/her a bed?? our cat now sleeps in our bed but will our new kitty be wanting her own space??? also anything else you think i should prepare for or need to know about this breed please .

i hop you dont mind all of these questions i just want to make sure were prepared for our new baby , so/he she feels happy and comfortable here.

thanks so much in advance x

Hi, I know nothing on the breed itself other than how beautiful they are

Where have you found these potential ones? Whoever has them now should be able to advise you on the quantity. If you do go for a kitten they need to be allowed to eat as much as they want until around 1 year old. So they will eat you out of house and home

Most cats it seems will not use a bed, but saying that my little kitten has really taken to his igloo bed. I wonder what will happen when he grows out of it as by summer I think he'll be too big.

Do you have the option to create a cat run or to cat proof your garden to give him/her access to the outdoors? I think though this is a luxury, if you cannot do this don't worry as he/she will be fine in the house with plenty of toys and interaction from you, chasing games for excercise etc

You need to be really sure as much as you can be that whoever you choose will fit on ok in terms of personality as it would be so heartbreaking to have to rehome one just after you got them. Believe me, I had to do it due to my sons allergy and it was just awful.
If neither of these are suitable there are plenty more looking for homes.

Keep us posted.

I would go for a kitten with you already haveing a cat. MC's are fine on a harness & as indoor cats but do need alot of entertainment plus they eat you out of house & home Louie & Tango both have to snack regularly they sleep anywhere usually in the bathroom sink or on OH head

hi there thanks so much for replying, the garden is big but its on levels so theres no particular part i could put a run , thats fine i was worrying i know theyre big cats and werent sure if theyd need a certain amount of excercise.

were absoloutly making sure the cat we choose is prefect for us and that were perfect for him/her too! i absoloutly would not be rehoming any of my kitties , we only have one cat so wed love her to have a play mate so its essential they will adapt to each other. xxxx

I would have given an older MC a home there are plenty looking but darent risk it with the pensioners they tolerate kittens much easier to show a big little paws who's boss the boy may well be ok mind if he has'nt been used as a stud but I would leave the girl to someone who has'nt got any cats or you may end up with two very unhappy paws if she gets stressed already

Re: maine coon advice please...

We rehomed a 2 year old MC girl, and already had a 10+ year old cat. We had planned about how we would introduce them slowly, etc but in the end there really was no need. They had a couple of girly hissy squables and that was it. Now they often snuggle together. We've since introduced two crazy MC kittens and again we haven't had any problems with introductions.

MC's really are quite laid back (insane, but laid back).

We give the cats wet food in the morning and leave dried food all day/night for them.

Although MC's are definitely bigger, our oldest girl isn't hugely bigger than our oldest cat.

Re: maine coon advice please...

I can only agree with everything that DB has said...i really would go for a kitten, especially as you already have a cat in your home, It will be much easier for you to bring in a kitten than an adult, As for exercise well lots of MC owners do walk them in a harness, ours are indoor cats and its surprising the amount of exercise they get chasing eachother about the house, but we do have a purpose built run in the garden where they go when the weather is kind. As for what they eat lol be prepared lol, they will eat huge amounts of anything, they will steal anything they can, even the food off your plate if you let them within a paws distance when your eating, dont turn your back on any food items coz they vanish in a flash.on a more serious note, they are the most loving pet you could wish for and dispite there huge size they really are gentle giants that will re-pay you with lots of love ...plz keep us informed of your choice.............Chris

Re: maine coon advice please...

Coonies are generally pretty laid back cats and get on with other pets without major problems, so don't discount adopting an older cat. They might take a little time to adjust, but will be firm friends soon enough. As for kids... Our two Coonies love our pair (8-13) and sleep in their bedrooms (although Dexter is not too impressed with Jessica dressing him up)!

Just remember that everything will need 'supersizing' from feed bowls to litter trays. Normal cat trees and scratchers won't cut it either!

And an en-suite is a good idea as they will take over your sink.
