Pet Insurance

How long after insuring my cat will they allow a claim if needed?

I stupidly didn't renew my cat's insurance and I think i'm going to have to take him to the vets AGAIN because he's pulling all the fur off his back legs and base of his tail, but it costs me at least £25 everytime I go... If they have to start doing tests for allergies it's going to cost me a fortune.

Please Help Thanks

I'm with PetPlan and insurance (for illness - accident is immediate) kicks in two weeks after start date.

Re: Pet Insurance

I'm with Petplan as well ..... 14 days after arrangement. Be careful though, because if this is a pre-existing condition, it might well not be covered.
buffie and Oscars mam like this.

As Jenny says pre existing conditions will most likely not be covered.I think this will even apply if you return to your previous insurer, but I'm not certain about that.It would be best to check with company before hand.

Re: Pet Insurance

Thanks guys, that was my next question...

I've not actually taken him to the vets for his fur pulling yet so there's nothing to say he has any issues. If I was to get insurance would he need a health check first to prove there's nothing wrong, or could I insure then go to the vets and claim if he does have problems?x

Re: Pet Insurance

I "think" if he has not been seen for anything relating to his current problem and there is nothing on his records stating a previous, related illness/issue you should be okay after the 14 day period.I didnt have to have a health check for Meeko but he was a kitten at the time,I'm not aware of any need for a health check prior to taking out insurance.

Re: Pet Insurance

This doesn't directly help, but maybe for the future. We've opened a savings account for the cats. We each put £15 a month into it on standing order and that way we've got a stash of money to pay for the kitties if/when they need anything vet related. We looked at insurance but for three cats it was quite expensive and there seemed to be a lot of hoops to jump through! If by some miracle they don't need much, then maybe they can go on a cruise with the cash

Thats how mine are but the op would have to read the small print as I belive now some companies are 28 days.

Plus OP - remember if your cat has been treated for this before it will be classed as pre existing condition
